RGV FC Fall at Home 0-1 to Bold
June 23, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC (5-7-4, 19 pts.) fell to Austin Bold FC (6-5-5, 23 pts.), 0-1, on Sunday night at H-E-B Park. The Bold now lead in the Copa Tejas with 7 points (2-0-1) while RGV FC falls to second with 4 points (1-1-1).
The first clear chance at danger on the defensive end for the Toros came at the 19th minute when Sonny Guadarrama shot a ball to the right side of the goal, prompting a heads up save by Nico Corti who sent the ball clear to a corner.
The Bold once again came close to scoring on a chance in the 23rd minute; Kleber Giacomazzi crept into the box to receive a set piece through ball and shot it to the left side of the goal to once again test Corti, who cleared the shot.
Despite a rather physical battle up front, RGV FC was unable to present a clear chance at scoring before the 40-minute mark rolled around. Camilo Monroy and Carlos Small connected for an impressive combo after a two-touch play by Small who sent a cross to the left side of the box, Monroy shot wide left on the play to end the danger.
The Toros maintained 52 percent of possession and managed just two shots on target in the first half of action which ended in a scoreless 0-0 draw before both teams headed to the break.
After a defensive miscue by Robert Coronado, Francis Atuahene stole the ball and sent a cross inside the box which was deflected by Corti. Unfortunately for the Toros, the deflection ended up at the feet of Andre Lima who tapped the ball into the net to make it 1-0 in favor for the Bold at the 50th minute.
Austin's offense nearly scored another goal as a header was sent on target, forcing a deflection from Corti who had a rather busy night under goal for RGV FC.
Jesus Enriquez dribbled into the left side of the box and took on the defender to create a chance at goal but got his shot attempt deflected to end the chance at the 83rd minute. The Toros grew impatient with the physicality of the Bold and the lack of offensive windows made it tough to attack.
Man of the match goes to Corti as he totaled six saves tonight, the most thus far. Kyle Adams totaled five clearances and one interception. He also had 54 total passes with 88.9 percent passing accuracy. Romilio Hernandez totaled four tackles, one clearance, one interception and one block. Hernandez also had 82.1 percent passing accuracy.
On the attacking front, both Small and Monroy totaled two shots and one on target. Isidro Martinez had two key passes tonight along with one shot. He also added three interceptions, three tackles and had six possessions gained.
Overall, the Toros totaled seven shots, two shots on target and an 80.3 percent passing accuracy. The Bold totaled 12 shots, seven on target and 81.8 percent passing accuracy.
