RGV FC Eliminated from U.S Open Cup

STATESBORO, Georgia - Rio Grande Valley FC fell to South Georgia Tormenta FC on the road in their 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup Second Round matchup on Wednesday evening, 1-2.

The home side found the net first as they sent a shot to the top left end of the goal on a crossing play; John Murphy took the shot after receiving an assisted cross from Mukwelle Akele at the 40th minute, 0-1.

RGV FC drew a penalty at the 67th minute as Ricky Ruiz was fouled inside the box; Taylor Davila took the penalty but was denied as Pablo Jara made the diving save to his left side, 0-1.

Kingsford Adjehi spread the score wide open on the night for South Georgia Tormenta FC as they took the 0-2 lead at the 81st minute; Nick Akoto was credited with the assist on the play.

Ricky Ruiz stole one back for the Toros as he sent a rifling shot into the net to make it 1-2 late in the 91st minute of the match.

Rio Grande Valley was unsuccessful in mounting an equalizer and ultimately fell after a long night defensively, giving up two counterattack goals.

The loss marked the earliest departure by the club since its debut in 2022, when they reached the Third Round of the U.S Open Cup.
