Richmond Revolution News Release
RICHMOND, VA.: SportsQuest and the Richmond Revolution announced today at a press conference held at the historical St. John's Church in Richmond that the team had hired their first head coach, Steve Criswell.
Criswell began his coaching career in 1984, coaching receivers for Henrico High School in Richmond, VA. The next year he became the assistant offensive line coach and the following year he took over both the offensive and defensive lines.
In 1989, Criswell began four-year stints at Virginia's Petersburg, Bridgewater's Turner Ashby and Richmond's Hermitage High Schools before making the move to the indoor game after the 2000 season.
In 2001, Criswell coached the Fullbacks and Linebackers for the Richmond Speed under Head Coach Richard Davis. That year, the Speed appeared in the Arena Cup, af2's championship game.
After 3 years with the Speed, Coach Criswell became the FB/LB's coach for the Cape Fear Wildcats, also of the af2, serving with Head Coach Chris Siegfried.
In 2005, Steve came home to join the Richmond Bandits of the AIFL, coaching the Offensive Line, Defensive Line, Linebackers and Fullbacks compiling an 11-1 record and winning the inaugural AIFL Championship. 2006 saw the Bandits finish with a 12-2 record during the regular season.
2007 and 2008 were spent on Will McClay's staff for the AFL Dallas Desperados as the Offensive Line and Special Teams Coach. In 2007, the Desperados set an AFL record by compiling 15 regular season wins. In all, 2 fullbacks, 3 lineman and 2 special teams players received All-Arena honors during the 2 years of Criswell's tutelage.
During his 8 year indoor career, teams in which he has been on staff have compiled an overall record of 97-33 (.746) and qualified for post season play 7 of 8 years.
"We had interest from a number of amazingly talented coaches from all over the United States, and were thrilled to find someone of Steve's caliber in our own backyard," said SportsQuest President, Phil Evans.
