POSTGAME QUOTES: New England Revolution II 1 vs. Inter Miami II 0
Revolution II Head Coach Clint Peay
On his assessment of the win vs. Inter Miami II:
Peay: "I thought we were fortunate to walk out of there with the goal, because I don't think we played particularly well. I don't think Miami caused us a lot of problems, but I think it was a game where we were not as disciplined and focused as we needed to be, and it made the game harder than it needed to be."
On team's recent defensive play:
Peay: "I think the team has worked harder in transition moments to get back behind the ball. They just had a level of focus better on their tackles; just been more of a collective effort, and that helps."
On rotation of players getting opportunities:
Peay: "It's always difficult when you make changes. You can lose, potentially, the rhythm of it, whether it be subs coming on or changes in the starting lineup, but I felt the guys who got their first starts acquitted themselves fairly well for the most part. And it's difficult because they don't have the 90-minutes match fitness in them, so I think they fatigued a little bit there in the second half."
On winning despite not playing their best:
Peay: "Obviously that's what you're looking for: three points. You're looking to win games, especially when you're at home, in a difficult situation where there's little rest, so we're certainly pleased about that, but we do recognize that it could have been better on the night."
On getting a goal off a set play:
Peay: "It's critical. Those are free chances to be dangerous. And tonight, I think the delivery was good by Jake [Rozhansky] and obviously Pierre [Cayet]. He's a guy in the box who finds a way to get loose and he's very dangerous. Hats off to the guys for executing. It was great."
Revolution II Defender Pierre Cayet
On team's overall performance:
Cayet: "I think that we achieved our goal, which is to always get the three points. I think we could have made the game a little bit easier on ourselves, especially with a man down. There was pressure from a couple days ago and some of the guys were a little tired, but I think overall, we've done a good job securing the three points and keeping a clean sheet."
On the squad's depth:
Cayet: "It's huge because things like that last year we were struggling with, and this year, we are trying to make the playoffs. That's the kind of performance we need from the group. We may not always be at our best but that's when we got to show up, do the little things right, stick with our principles and hopefully it pays off."
On two consecutive clean sheets:
Cayet: "The attitude definitely switched a little bit. I feel like we've been putting a lot more work in defensively as a group and the midfielders have been helping us a lot. I think anytime the ball's around the box, we've been extra focused because we've been managing to keep the ball a little more, so the energy is higher. We're able to make those plays that maybe we weren't able to make before, but keeping a clean sheet is massive in this league. If you can keep a clean sheet with the forwards we have, the performances will keep coming and I think there's going to be great results every single week.
On his ability to score as a defender:
Cayet: "It's huge because teams don't want to concede any set pieces. Every time me and the other guys go into the box, we're able to be threats. It's definitely something that we've been working on, and I think I'm doing a good job helping the guys on top contributing offensively. We got both sides of the ball helping us in behind, so I think it's massive to be able to do both."
Revolution Goalkeeper Jacob Jackson
On returning to action after recovering from ACL surgery:
Jackson: "It's super fun to be back. It's been, I think, 11 months of rehab, so I think it's just awesome to be back again. I went through a lot with the rehab, but luckily our training staff's good, [Revolution Goalkeeper Coach Kevin Hitchcock] has been awesome pushing me to get back to where I'm at. Clint [Peay], everyone in the organization, I've been very grateful for them having me come in, work with the second team and just get reps again, because it is still challenging. The speed of everything from the second team to the first team, but I'm just happy to be making improvements every day."
On where he is in terms of fitness and sharpness:
Jackson: "I don't know. At the end of the day, I would always like to say 100 percent, but realistically, I couldn't give you an answer besides the hopeful of like, I think I'm 100 percent, I feel 100 percent. It's really until [Kevin Hitchcock], Bruce [Arena], all them say, 'You look good and you're moving well and improving well.' So, that's kind of what I base this off of."
On the roles of goalkeeper coaches Kevin Hitchcock and Yuta Nomura in his rehab:
Jackson: "It's been awesome. [Kevin Hitchcock] actually would stay out later after trainings and let me come in and we'd do individual stuff. Even Djordje [Petrović] would come over and help out. Nico [Campuzano], Max Weinstein, all these guys would come, Earl [Edwards Jr.], they'd all come out and they helped me individually come up in terms of the rehab part. At least whatever Josh [Williams] would let me or the trainers would let me. They were all good. They were all giving me advice. Even in meetings after this we'll go watch as a group, and they'll critique me and help me out, so I can't be more thankful."
On keeping a clean sheet:
Jackson: "It's good. I'm still upset, though. There's a couple mistakes I had - a throw I had in the second half, a couple possession things. Again, I'm being hard on myself. It's great to get the win, I'm glad to get the win. Proud of Revs II for busting their butts to get the win as well. In my eyes, I need to do a little bit better, but overall, I'm happy for the win."
