Reno Silver Sox Win 2006 Golden Baseball League Championship

(Pleasanton, CA. September 5, 2006) The Reno Silver Sox defeated the Fullerton Flyers 5-3 on Saturday night to claim the 2006 Golden Baseball League Championship at Goodwin Field in Fullerton, California.

Led by Championship Series MVP Doug Gredvig, the Silver Sox defeated the Flyers three games to one after sweeping the first two games in Reno, dropping Game Three in Fullerton, and then finishing off the Flyers in Game Four.

Reno won the first half league championship with a 25-15 record and finished with a league-best overall record of 47-33 as they had to retool after losing five players that were signed by major league organizations during the season. Led all season by C Marcus Jensen, 1B Gredvig, RHP Ben Thurmond and the relief duo of Scott Schneider and Nate Sevier, the Silver Sox added OF Demond Smith, OF Carlos Rodriguez and 3B Lou Lucca to reload for the playoffs.

Fullerton started the season slow with a first-half record of 17-23, but veteran manager Garry Templeton re-vamped his team for the second half and caught the Chico Outlaws on the last weekend of the season to wrap up the second-half title and a spot in the GBL Championship Series versus Reno. The Flyers went 26-14 in the second half and 23-8 down the stretch to finish with an overall record of 43-37 for the year. An offensive powerhouse in the second half, Flyer's 1B Peanut Williams led the league in Home Runs and RBIs, while late season additions of DH Trevor Hall, 3B Hector Zamora, INF Clemente Bonilla, OF Jesse Schmidt, and C Buddy Morales provided all the run support needed by a pitching staff led by starters Chris Jakubauskas and Jeremy Sugarman along with relief ace Wes Faust.

"This was another exciting season for our fans and players," said Golden Baseball League Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "Great pennant races, first class family entertainment, and an increasing level of baseball talent all marked a very successful Year Two for the GBL in 2006."
