Reno Silver Sox News Release
(Pleasanton, CA. May 22, 2006) The Golden Baseball League today announced that Reno Silver Sox left-handed pitcher Chris Key has had his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition, Reno Silver Sox shortstop Milko Jaramillo has had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Phillies plan to send Key to Double-A Reading while the Brewers will deploy Jaramillo to their Triple-A Nashville ball club.
"This is a great opportunity for these two young men, but we sure are sad to see them go," said Reno Silver Sox team Manager Les Lancaster. "Both have very bright futures and should do very well in these farm systems.
Key, 28 and a native of the Reno area, is a 6-foot-3 210-pound left-handed pitcher who has spent the last six seasons in the minor leagues, reaching AAA in both 2004 and 2005. He was originally signed by the Florida Marlins after an outstanding career at San Jose State where he led the Spartans into the 2000 College World Series, garnered All-Conference Awards, and still holds the school's single season wins record at 13. He spent four years in the Marlins' farm system, mostly as a reliever, and compiled a won-loss record of 20-8 and a sparkling E.R.A of 1.87 as he reached the Double-A level after being selected as a Midwest League All-Star in Single-A. He was then selected in the 3rd round of the 2003 Rule V Draft by the Seattle Mariners and played mostly in Double-A San Antonio and AAA Tacoma the next two seasons as he compiled a 13-5 record. For his minor league career he has one of the finest records for active pitchers with a 33-13 record with 23 saves, a winning percentage of .717, and a lifetime E.R.A of 2.51.
Jaramillo, 25, is a 5-foot-11 165-pound shortstop who has almost 800 minor league games under his belt from Rookie ball to Triple-A. He was originally signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as a 17 year-old and began his pro career in 1997. He spent the next five seasons in the Dodgers' farm system, spearheading the defense for the San Bernardino Inland Empire 66ers in 2000, who won the California League Championship. He was plucked away by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2001 Rule V Draft and quickly worked his way up their organization. He reached Double-A Tennessee in the Southern League in 2004 and then split time in the Double-A Texas League and at Memphis in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League where he hit .395 in 20 games of the 2005 season for the Redbirds.
"Both of these players have had Triple-A experience and are great examples of the increasing level of talent in the GBL this coming season and the recognition of our players by Major League Baseball," said Kevin Outcalt, GBL Commissioner. "Since the start of this calendar year we've now sold 14 players, allowing them to continue their climb to the majors."
The 2006 season for the Reno Silver Sox opens at home on Friday, June 2nd versus the Long Beach Armada at Peccole Park on the University of Nevada campus. Tickets, merchandise, and sponsor opportunities are all still available at www.silversoxbaseball.com.
