Reno Silver Sox Marcus Jensen Signed by Oakland as Hitting Coach

(Pleasanton, CA. January 25, 2007) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that Marcus Jensen, catcher for the Reno Silver Sox has signed with the Oakland Athletics to become their hitting coach in the Arizona Rookie League. Jensen, a GBL All-Star last season, retires after having an outstanding season in the GBL last year as he was an all-star catcher, 2nd in the league in MVP voting, received the Golden Glove award for catchers, and won numerous player of the week and month awards.

"Marcus was a tremendous part of our championship team last year, both on the field with his play and with his clubhouse leadership," said Les Lancaster, Manager of the Reno Silver Sox. "I'm excited for him as he starts his professional coaching career with Oakland, and expect him to be very successful."

Jensen, 34, began his professional career in 1990. Drafted by the San Francisco Giants as the 33rd player overall in the first round, Marcus made his major league debut in 1996 and went on to play in the major leagues with seven different teams. He also has extensive international experience, playing in the Pan Am Games and winning a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. He has played the last two seasons in the Golden Baseball League, for the Mesa Miners in 2005 and for the Silver Sox last year. He is the fifth player or coach from last season's GBL to be signed by a major league organization to coach or manage as he joins Benny Castillo (Tigers), Rusty Meacham (Nationals), Charlie Hough (Dodgers), and Tim Blackwell (White Sox) on the move from the GBL to MLB.
