Reno Silver Sox News Release
(Reno, Nevada, February 13, 2006) The Reno Silver Sox announced today the signing of two experienced minor league players. Outfielder Caleb Maher, a Golden Baseball League All-Star last season for the Mesa Miners, and right-handed pitcher Dustin Kupper, a starting pitcher for the Yuma Scorpions last season, have signed contracts for the 2006 campaign with the Silver Sox.
Caleb Maher, a 22 year old, 6'2", 200 pound right-handed hitting outfielder will begin his second season in the GBL after being selected to the GBL All-Star team as a member of the Mesa Miners last year. He was a 9th-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2002 amateur draft out of Ceres High School in Ceres, California. He played in the Angel's system for three years, hitting .316 at Provo in the Pioneer League in 2004 before being released. He joined the Mesa Miners of the GBL last season and became their starting left-fielder, while hitting .287 with 11 home runs and 64 RBIs. He finished in the Top 5 League Leaders in RBIs, Home Runs, and Total Bases while winning one Player of the Week Award and being named to the mid-season All-Star team.
Dustin Kupper, a 24 year old, 6'6", 195 pound right-hander will begin his second season in the Golden Baseball League after pitching for the Yuma Scorpions in 2005. Originally drafted in the 9th-round out of Pima Community College in Arizona by the Florida Marlins, he played three seasons in their farm system, followed by a stint with the Cincinnati Reds' team at Billings, MT in the Pioneer League in 2004. He joined the Yuma Scorpions last season and finished with a 6-3 record while starting 14 games. He threw one complete game shutout, and struck out 63 while walking only 35 in 76 innings pitched. He was also selected for one GBL Player of the Week Award during the season.
"It's great to add two players that have proven they can play very well at this level," said Reno Silver Sox manager Les Lancaster. "Although I wouldn't be surprised if both of these guys end up being acquired back by major league organizations sometime during our season."
