Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Early trouble translated into a 6-1 loss for the Tacoma Rainiers in the team's series opener against the Reno Aces at Cheney Stadium on Thursday night.
The Aces jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the game's first two innings, beginning with a four-run frame in the first. Mike Jacobs drove in two runs with a double, and Brad Snyder added another after he turned in an RBI double two batters later. Tyler Bortnick chipped in a fourth run with a bases-loaded walk.
Third baseman Matt Davidson hit his 14th home run of the season with one out in the top of the second inning to up Tacoma's deficit to five runs.
The Rainiers lone run came in the bottom of the fifth when shortstop Carlos Triunfel hit a home run to left field with one out in the bottom of the fifth. It was the fifth home run for Triunfel this season.
Tacoma combined to collect four hits in the contest. Outfielder Carlos Peguero was responsible for half of that total after going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. He has now hit safely in eight consecutive games dating back to July 4.
Starter Brandon Maurer allowed all four of Reno's runs in the first inning on two hits and two walks issued. The right-hander left the game later in the frame without recording an out.
Relievers Forrest Snow (4.0 IP), Josh Kinney (3.0 IP) and Jonathan Arias (2.0 IP) combined to limit the Aces to two runs on four hits over nine innings.
At 55-40, Tacoma boasts the best record in the Pacific Coast League and now holds a three-game lead over the Salt Lake Bees for first place in the Pacific Northern Division.
The Rainiers host the second game of a four-game series with the Aces (38-57) at 7 p.m. tomorrow, July 12. Right-hander Chance Ruffin (0-0, -.--) is slated to make his 2013 Tacoma debut against Reno's right-hander Charles Brewer (3-7, 5.38).
