History Lesson: On this day in 2009, Tony La Russa won his 2,500th victory as a manager when the Cardinals defeat Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium, 12-5. Joining Connie Mack and John McGraw, the Redbird skipper, who also piloted the White Sox and A's, became only the third major league manager to reach the milestone. La Russa served four seasons in the Diamondbacks organization, most recently as chief baseball analyst. La Russa, 74, joined the Diamondbacks four years ago to take over as the club's Chief Baseball Officer, essentially replacing then-general manager Kevin Towers as the organization's point man on all matters on-the-field.
