Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA - Ottawa Renegades defensive end Anthony Collier was named the Rogers-CFL Lineman of the Week Tuesday, following a record-tying performance against the B.C. Lions on Friday, July 8.
In the Week 3 affair under the dome of B.C. Place, Collier sacked Lions quarterback Dave Dickenson five times - including back-to-back sacks in the first quarter. The effort tied a league record for most in the category for a single game. The Dallas, TX native also deflected a Dickenson pass that was intercepted by Ottawa linebacker Jason Kralt and registered a defensive tackle.
"We're extremely pleased with the results of his play. Anytime you can get five sacks, it is quite a feat," said Joe Paopao, head coach and general manager of the Renegades. "We are pleased for Anthony for his accomplishments and his award and hope he continues to play at this high level."
Collier, who measures 6-foot-3 and 255-pounds, was initially credited for five sacks, before having the figure modified after the game to four and a tackle-for-loss. Under new rules, however, if the quarterback is tackled behind the line of scrimmage it should be scored a sack - which gives him the original total of five.
The second-year Renegade, who came to Ottawa out of Baylor University in 2004, leads the CFL in sacks (5) and also has four tackles for the season. His five-sack effort in one regular season game makes him the eighth player in league history to match the feat. Montreal Alouettes linebacker Duane Butler was the most recent player to do it, in 2003 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
"That is as good a performance as you're going to see from a defensive end," said Greg Marshall, the Renegades defensive coordinator. "I thought he did a tremendous job."
Collier, 26, is the third Renegades player over the last two weeks to be honoured nationally. Ottawa quarterback Kerry Joseph was named the Rogers-CFL Offensive Player of the Week last Tuesday, while kicker Matt Kellett also received the Rogers-CFL Special Teams Player of the Week accolade a week ago.
The Renegades to action on home turf Saturday, July 16 against the Calgary Stampeders at Frank Clair Stadium. Tickets are available either at the Renegades ticket office (1015 Bank Street), on the Internet (http://www.capitaltickets.ca), by phone (613.599.3267 or 877.788.3267), any Sports Experts location in the Ottawa and Gatineau regions as well as the Corel Centre Box Office in Kanata.
