BURLINGTON, VT --- Garrett Groce went 2-for-5 with two runs, three RBI and snapped a 3-3 tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning that helped lead the Hudson Valley Renegades to a 6-4 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Sunday evening at Centennial Field.

Groce gave the Renegades a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run single to score Eric Durante and Rhyne Hughes. Josh Johnson lined a solo homer down the leftfield line off Expos starter Marco Estrada to lead off the second inning for a 3-0 Hudson Valley advantage.

Renegade starter Greg Reinhard cruised through the firs three innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven, but the Expos bats came alive in the fourth. Francisco Plasencia led off the fourth with his fifth home run of the season to put Vermont on the scoreboard.

After a walk to Dee Brown, Leonard Davis drilled a triple to straightaway center to score Brown and Davis tied the game 3-3 when he scored on a sacrifice fly from Drew McMillan.

But the tie was short lived as Groce smacked a one-out pitch over the leftfield wall for his sixth home run of the season and third RBI of the night. The Renegades added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh on a RBI single from Alex Jamieson and RBI groundout from Neil Walton for a 6-3 Hudson Valley lead.

Vermont rallied for a run in the ninth on a hit batter, walk and RBI single from Mike Daniel, but Aaron Coose came on in relief and induced Rolando Arnedo into a 6-3 double play to end the game.

Reinhard (2-3) allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts over five innings for the victory, while Jamieson and Hall each had two hits for Hudson Valley (22-22).

Estrada (1-2) allowed four runs on four hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings for the loss, while Daniel and Arnedo each had two hits for Vermont (16-30). The loss snapped a 4-game home winning streak for the Expos.

Vermont and Hudson Valley will play game two of the three-game series at Centennial Field on Monday night beginning at 7:05 p.m.
