Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- The Washington Nationals announced today that outfielder Brandon Watson will be called up to the Nationals on Monday, making Watson the 40th former Vermont Expos player to reach the Major Leagues.
Watson hit .291 (81-for-278) with 53 runs, nine doubles, 30 RBI and 26 stolen bases for Vermont during the 2000 season. Watson set an Expos record, tied earlier this season by Dee Brown, with six RBI in a game vs. New Jersey on July 26, 2000.
The ninth-round selection of the Montreal Expos in the 1999 draft, Watson spent the 2001 and 2002 seasons in long-season Class-A ball. He hit .319 at Double-A Harrisburg in 2003 and .293 at Triple-A Edmonton in 2004.
After beginning the 2005 season with Double-A Harrisburg, Watson was called up to Triple-A New Oreans early in the year. He leaves New Orleans after hitting .355 (114-for-321) with 67 runs, 14 doubles, two triples, one homer and 20 RBI.
Of the 40 former Vermont players to reach the majors, Watson will be the 16th to play in the Major Leagues in 2005. To make room for Watson on the Washington roster, the Nationals are expected to designate former Vermont outfielder Matt Cepicky for assignment.
