Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, Ga.- Savannah Sand Gnats relief pitcher Paul Paez has been honored as the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for his fantastic play from August 18 through August 24. The lefty struck out nine batters while giving up just one hit and one walk over six and one-third innings during two appearances.

Paez's first 16 appearances with Savannah this season produced mixed results. He was then transferred to the short-season Brooklyn Cyclones, where he struck out seven over five and one-third scoreless innings.

Since being promoted back to Savannah, the five-foot-nine Paez has produced a stat line that is barely recognizable, giving up just one earned run over 11 and one-thirds innings, and striking out 13 batters while walking just one.

Paez hails from West Covina, Calif., and was drafted by the New York Mets in the 39th round out of Rio Hondo Community College.

Paez's selection represents the fourth such award for the Gnats this season. He joins Akeel Morris and John Gnat as the third Savannah pitcher to earn the award this season.

Kansas City Royals prospect and Lexington outfielder, Elier Hernandez was also honored as SAL Player of the Week. He racked up a .640/.654/.840 slash line with a home run and two doubles over six games.
