Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK - The Express bats appear to be heating up, but Oklahoma City (46-45) was just a little hotter Friday night, topping Round Rock (39-53) 9-7 in extra innings.
With one out in the top of the tenth inning and a runner on third, RedHawk Esteban German grounded into what looked like it might be an inning-ending double play. But the all-star infielder narrowly beat out the throw, and the go-ahead run scored to make it 8-7. Chris Davis followed with a double to score German and make it 9-7.
For the second night in a row, Round Rock scored 5-plus runs, and for the second night in a row, it wasn't enough in extra innings.
Oklahoma City topped Round Rock 7-5 in 14 innings on Thursday night.
For a while, things looked promising for the Express.
After the RedHawks got out to an early 2-0 lead, Round Rock went on the offensive against Oklahoma City starter Kris Benson. Tommy Manzella led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single to left-center field, and Brian Bogusevic reached on a muffed grounder by RedHawks shortstop Joaquin Arias. With runners at first and second, John Gall doubled off the right field wall to bring home Manzella and put runners at second and third. Jason Smith followed that with an 0-1 home run to right field to make it 4-2, Express.
Up 5-2 in the sixth inning, Round Rock third baseman Chris Johnson hit a two-run home run to left field that also brought home Edwin Maysonet to make it 7-2.
Oklahoma mounted a four-run rally in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7-7, thanks to doubles by Esteban German, Justin Smoak and Chris Davis.
Bogusevic led Round Rock at the plate with two hits.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with left-hander Polin Trinidad taking the mound for Round Rock against Oklahoma City and right-hander Guillermo Moscoso.
It should be a special night at Dell Diamond, regardless of the outcome on the field.
Eleven members of the 1959 Austin Senators - a team which downed San Antonio 5-4 on Sept. 18, 1959 to win the Texas League Championship before moving on to capture the Pan American Association title four days later - will gather at Saturday night's game for an evening of recognition.
The first 3,000 fans Saturday will be treated to throwback Austin Senators caps presented by AT&T and Round Rock Express players will don Senators replica uniforms before the 11 former teammates throw out the game's ceremonial first pitch. In the top of the seventh inning, all eleven will be awarded 1959 Texas League Championship rings - rings which they never received.
The ring ceremony will be held at the beginning of the seventh inning.
