Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Fresno Grizzlies kept the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at bay all night as they rolled to a 7-2 victory over the Sox in front of 7,197 fans at Security Service Field.
The Grizzlies got things started in the third when catcher Buster Posey smacked an RBI single into left off Sky Sox starter Esmil Rodgers (1-1) who struggled to find his control early. Second baseman Matt Downs also added an RBI single in the inning giving the Grizzlies a 2-0 advantage. Rodgers got burned for two more runs in the fifth as he gave up a solo blast to center fielder Ben Copeland and later surrendered a sacrifice fly to Downs that brought home first baseman Jesus Guzman giving the Grizzlies a 4-0 lead.
Fresno's starter Steve Hammond (6-8) had a strong performance as he didn't allow the Sky Sox to score until his reliever Osiris Matos surrendered a two-run double to pinch-hitter Kenny Perez in the seventh ; one of the runs counting towards Matos' ERA as he left a runner on first when Matos relieved him. Hammond finished the game surrendering one run on five hits with five strikeouts. The Sky Sox little rally in the seventh closed the Grizzlies gap to 4-2.
The Grizzlies didn't think much of the rally as they added three unearned runs in the top of the eighth stretching their lead to 7-2. Felix Romero would come on for Fresno and finish out the eighth and ninth innings holding the Sox scoreless and sealing the game at 7-2 over the Sox.
Tomorrow nights game will have a 7:05 PM start and will feature RH Adam Eaton (3-2, 1.95) of the Sox versus righty Ramon Ortiz (1-2, 3.36) of the Grizzlies.
