TODAY'S OPPONENT:
The Memphis Redbirds are the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. They have been a member of the Pacific Coast League since 1998. Last season, the Redbirds finished third in the American North with a record of 58-86.
VS. MEMPHIS:
The RedHawks lead the season series 7-5. The RedHawks took three of four July 16-19 at Memphis. The Hawks took three of four April 13-16 at The Brick. The Redbirds took three of four to start the season at AutoZone Park April 5-8. Last season, the RedHawks won the season series 11-5.
TODAY'S GAME:
This is game 121 of the season, and the first of a 4-game series between Oklahoma and Memphis. This is the 13th of 16 meetings between the RedHawks and Redbirds this season.
LAST GAME:
The RedHawks were swept at home for the first time this season, losing 10-2 to Iowa last night. The Cubs scored a run in the first inning and six runs on four hits in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead. The Hawks scored a run in the third and a run in the sixth. The Cubs added two runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to make the final score 10-2. Kevin West led the way for the RedHawks at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a homer in his first game back from the DL. Starter Robinson Tejeda had a rough outing as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on four hits in two innings.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Edinson Volquez
goes to the mound for the sixth time as a RedHawk. He won Wednesday at Sacramento, throwing seven scoreless innings as he struck out nine River Cats. Last season, Volquez was 2-1 with a 2.60 ERA in three starts against the Redbirds, with 22 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. Mike Parisi pitches for the Redbirds. Parisi is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts against the RedHawks this season.
STRUGGLING AT THE BRICK:
Since June 27th, the RedHawks have had more success on the road than they have at The Brick, going 16-6 on the road and just 6-15 at home. The Hawks are on a season-low 6-game home losing streak, and they have lost eight of their last nine at The Brick. The Hawks have a 5.54 ERA at home since June 27th compared to a 2.99 ERA on the road during that stretch.
LATE INNING FIZZLE:
The Hawks were winning or tied in the sixth inning in three of the four games against Iowa, but they were outscored 25-6 by the Cubs in the sixth through ninth innings. The Cubs hit .416 with nine doubles, a triple and four homers with eight walks after the sixth inning, while the RedHawks hit .295 with three doubles, a homer and eight walks walks during that same time.
HAWKS TURN TO VOLQUEZ:
Since August 1, the RedHawks are 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in Volquez's two starts. In the other 10 starts, they are 3-7 with a 6.00 ERA. Volquez has made it through the sixth in both his starts, while the other starters have finished the sixth just three times.
RELAFORD AT THE PLATE:
Relaford has at least one hit in six of his last seven games after going 3-for-3 last night. He went 9-for-14 with a homer against the Cubs. Relaford is hitting .440 (11-25) with a homer and four RBIs since rejoining the RedHawks Aug. 5.
LEAGUE LEADERS: Freddy Guzman
leads the league with 42 stolen bases. Tug Hulett is fourth with 83 runs scored.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
The RedHawks are 8-8 on Tuesday this season, and they're 21-10 in the first game of a series...the Hawks have lost four of their last five home series...the RedHawks have at least one extra-base hit in 15 straight games... Victor Diaz has 24 RBIs in his last 24 games...Nate Gold has five homers and 13 RBIs in 12 August games...
