Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. â - Despite getting two home runs from left fielder Rymer Liriano the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (40-20) were not able to overcome a five-run deficit and lost 6-4 to the Kansas City Monarchs (39-21) on Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field. Monarchs' catcher Alexis Olmeda hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth to cap off a four-run inning.
The scoring started right away, as Kansas City left fielder Kevin Santa opened the game with an RBI single in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Pete Kozma made it a two-run game with an RBI single of his own the next inning. The RedHawks got a run back in the bottom of the inning after shortstop Sam Dexter hit a solo home run, his fifth of the season.
In the sixth inning Kansas City scored four runs, including three on the Olmeda home run. Left-hander Peyton Wigginton (4-2) gave up five of the six total runs on five hits and five walks in 5.1 innings pitched and earned the loss. Reliever Tanner Riley pitched 0.2 innings and gave up a run on two hits. Luke Lind and Joe Jones combined to pitch the final three innings and didn't allow a run.
Fargo-Moorhead made the game close late as they scored a run each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning. Kansas City Lewis Thorpe (6-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings pitched. The former major leaguer struck out seven batters in the win. Relievers Jordan Martinson and Jeremy Rhoades each gave up one run in an inning pitched. Jameson McGrane came into the game in the ninth inning and gave up a walk but struck out two and earned his tenth save of the season.
Right fielder John Silviano and bench coach Anthony Renz were both ejected in the loss and first baseman Manuel Boscan left the game with an injury after the third inning.
Fargo-Moorhead and Kansas City will continue their three-game series with a 6:00 p.m. game tomorrow night at Newman Outdoor Field. The RedHawks starter has not yet been announced. The Monarchs will start RHP Jon Harris (3-1, 4.84 ERA).
