JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (24-44) and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (36-29) combined for 33 runs and 38 hits as the RedHawks beat the JackHammers 19-14 before 3,466 fans in the opener of a three-game series at Silver Cross Field on Friday night.

The RedHawks leaped forward to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. SS Zach Penprase (4-6) worked a one-out walk and scored on a double by 3B Jeremiah Piepkorn (2-5).

The JackHammers responded in a big way with four runs in the 1st inning to take a 4-1 lead. SS Kevin Rios (1-6) hit a double and scored on a double by 3B Vince Harrison (1-4). LF Brad Correll (2-4) smacked an RBI single to plate Harrison. RF Joe Gaetti (1-2) singled Correll to second base. He moved to third base on an error by RedHawks 1B Ruben Salazar.

1B Freddie Thon (2-3) hit a two-run double to plate both men and give the JackHammers a three-run advantage.

The RedHawks pushed across three runs to tie the game in the 3rd inning before scoring six runs in the 5th inning to take a commanding 10-4 lead.

Correll smacked a solo home run over the centerfield wall in the 5th inning to get the JackHammers within five runs at 10-5

In the 6th inning, the RedHawks utilized the "long-ball" to build on their lead. DH Randall Simon (2-5) led off the inning with a double and scored on a two-run home run by C Alan Rick (3-5). After 2B Carlo Cota (2-5) walked, LF Justin Justice (3-6) hit a two-run home run. It was his second home run of the game and it gave the RedHawks a 14-5 lead.

Joliet pushed across three runs in the 6th inning. Thon worked a walk and DH Kyle Nichols (2-6) singled. 2B Wally Backman, Jr. (1-2) doubled and scored Thon from second base. C Tug Gillingham (0-3) grounded out and scored Nichols from third base. Backman, Jr. moved to third base on the play. SS Kevin Rios (1-6) followed with anther groundout to score Backman, Jr. and make it 14-8.

The teams traded runs in the 7th and 8th innings before the JackHammers came to the plate down by seven runs in the 9th inning. The JackHammers scored two runs in the 9th inning on an RBI single by LF Rob Dahlberg (2-2) and pushed across three runs in total before the RedHawks won the marathon game.

The JackHammers continue their series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. It's the Conrad's Harley Davidson Hogs and Hammers Night alomg with the America's Best Frisbee Dogs at the ballpark tomorrow night. The RedHawks send LHP Broc Coffman (7-4, 5.55) to the mound against RHP Derek Barrows (2-1, 6.30) for the JackHammers.
