Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL-Back-to-back-to-back home runs, including a Cory Patton grand slam, helped the Winnipeg Goldeyes pull away in an eight-run eighth inning to beat the Schaumburg Flyers, 12-4, in front of 5,992 fans at Alexian Field on Friday night.
The Goldeyes started the scoring in the top of the first. Patton led off with a single and then scored on a double by Josh Asanovich. Asanovich later scored on a single by Brett Metheny, giving Winnipeg an early 2-0 lead.
But the Flyers struck back in the bottom of the first. Lyndon Poole singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a double by Victor Ferrante. Richard Mercado brought Poole home on a sacrifice fly, and Jeff Dunbar's single scored Ferrante. Dunbar advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Tony Mansolino, and the Flyers led 3-2 after one.
Winnipeg took the lead back in the top of the third. Patton reached first on a dropped third strike, advanced to third after a walk to Asanovich and single by Juan Diaz, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Metheny.
Ferrante tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a towering solo home run that hit the Alexian Field scoreboard in left field.
All was quiet until the top of the eighth. With two outs and Josh Giles in his second inning of relief in a 4-4 game, Dee Brown hit an RBI double scoring Kevin West. Giles then loaded the bases and walked Dustin Richardson to score Brown. The score was only 6-4 at this point, still with two outs, when Patton crushed a grand slam to right center. Joseph Campbell came in to relieve Giles and gave up back-to-back solo home runs to Diaz and West, capping off an eight-run inning, and giving the Goldeyes a 12-4 lead.
Ed Almonte got the start for the Flyers, pitching six innings and giving up four runs while striking out six. Mark Michael, the starter for the Goldeyes, also went six innings, gave up four runs and struck out six. Giles took the loss, giving up six runs in the eighth, and falls to 1-1. Goldeyes reliever Jordan Stewart pitched three innings in relief to get the victory, improving to 3-1 on the year.
The Goldeyes remain in first place and are now 42-24 on the season. The Flyers lost their third straight to the Goldeyes this season and fall to 30-37.
Ferrante led the Flyers by going 3-4 with a home run, a double and two runs scored. Dee Brown led the way for the Goldeyes with three hits.
Game two of this three-game series is tomorrow night. LHP Carmen Pignatiello (5-7, 6.26) will take the hill for the Flyers, against RHP Andrew Cruse (5-3, 4.81) of the Goldeyes. First pitch is at 6:05 with fireworks following the game.
