Oklahoma City Comets News Release
TONIGHT: The Oklahoma City RedHawks meet the Albuquerque Isotopes in the second of a 4-game series at Isotopes Park. Albuquerque took Game 1 last night 6-2 and leads the season series 7-6, but the RedHawks have a 3-2 edge in games played in Albuquerque. OKC has dropped to 2.5 games back of the Isotopes in the American North Division. The RedHawks will start righthander Luis Mendoza, who earned a win in his last start by going 8 innings vs. Nashville. Albuquerque counters with lefthander Scott Elbert, who has not faced the RedHawks in his career.
ALBUQUERQUE TAKES GAME ONE: The Isotopes scored single runs in 6 different innings last night on the way to a 6-2 win. For the second time this season, Bryan Corey started a game in Albuquerque on a day Guillermo Moscoso was recalled to the Rangers. The previous game resulted in no decision in a rallying OKC win, however last night Corey (4-5) allowed 4 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings for the loss in his first start since July 10. The RedHawks had 11 hits, including 4 by Julio Borbon and a solo homer by Brandon Boggs, but as a team went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Charlie Haeger (10-6) pitched his league-leading fourth 9-inning complete game and second against the RedHawks. Haeger is 4-0 against OKC this season. Royce Huffman extended his on-base streak to 21 games with a 2-hit night.
DIVISION RACE UPDATE: Despite going 15-10 in July, the RedHawks have lost 2 games in the standings this month and are currently 2.5 games out of first behind Albuquerque, which is 11-2 since the break and a PCL-best 17-7 this month.
SHADES OF CRAIG BRAZELL: Albuquerque's Mitch Jones has homered in 6 straight games against the RedHawks dating to a pinch-hit homer in the nightcap of a doubleheader May 30. Jones has 7 of Albuquerque's 14 homers against the RedHawks this season while playing in 9 of the 13 games in the season series. OKC has allowed a league-low 65 home runs, 10.8% by Jones alone. Jones has collected 15 RBIs against OKC. In 2007, Omaha's Craig Brazell belted 13 home runs and drove in 20 runs in 13 games against the RedHawks.
MORE LEFTIES: Scott Elbert will be the fifth left-handed starter OKC has faced in its last 6 games, as all 4 Nashville starters were lefties in the just-concluded series. For the season, the RedHawks are 24-16 in games started by lefties and 29-33 when facing righties.
CLOSE GAMES GOOD: OKC leads the league in one-run wins with a 20-11 record. OKC also has a league-best 12 wins (12-3) in games tied after 8 innings. The RedHawks' extra-inning record is 11-3. They have the second-most extra-inning wins behind Sacramento (13-3).
BLOWOUTS NOT SO GOOD: OKC is 28-17 in games decided by 2 runs or fewer, while Albuquerque is 21-22 in such games. On the other hand, the Isotopes are 35-25 in high-scoring games containing a margin of victory of 3 runs or more, while OKC is 25-32 in that category.
STREAKS END FOR DAVIS: Chris Davis had 6-game hitting and RBI streaks end last night. Davis had driven in 9 runs in his previous 6 games played. In 19 games with the RedHawks, Davis has 9 multi-hit and 7 multiple-RBI games. He's failed to hit safely only 4 times. The RedHawks are 12-7 since he joined the team July 6.
GERMAN AMONG LEADERS: Esteban German was blanked last night at 0-for-3, but he's still among the PCL leaders in various categories. German is tied for sixth in batting average (.326), second in on-base percentage at .426 and third in walks with 59. He leads the RedHawks with 57 RBIs and 32 stolen bases.
