Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- Before the game, the Redfish found out that Jackie Hernandez was managing his last game in Charlotte County. Cecil Fielder will be taking over the reigns and the Redfish wanted to send out Hernandez a winner and bring home their first series win of the season. Both dreams came true as the Redfish got great nights from PJ Lehmann and Jeremy McCann as they downed the Joes 8-4.
Lehmann started things off for the Redfish in the top of the 3rd inning against Joes starter Kevin Culpepper. Lehmann just stuck the bat out and placed a double down the third baseline. He came around to score on a seeing eye RBI single to center off the bat of first baseman Jeremy McCann. After Fernandez sacrificed McCann to second, Sam Martinez knocked a bloop single to right and the Redfish had runners on the corners with only 1 out. Mike Muscato gave Culpepper's pitch a ride and sacrificing home McCann and the Redfish led it 2-0.
The Joes answered on one swing of the bat as Heath Keel homered to left center and the game was all-square at 2 after 3 innings of play. The Joes added another run in the bottom of the 4th to take a 1 run lead but it didn't last for long. Lehmann reached second on a throwing error by the third baseman to lead off the 5th inning and the Redfish were at it again. McCann got his second consecutive hit and second consecutive RBI on a triple that rolled all the way to the wall in right. Fernandez helped out his own cause as he ripped an RBI double to almost the same spot as McCann's and the Redfish took the lead 4-3.
The Joes tied the game in the bottom of the 6th but the Redfish continued to do it in pairs and with the same cast of characters in the top of the 7th. Lehmann reached for the third time with a single to right and was followed by a McCann double that hugged the third baseline and brought him within a homerun of the cycle. After Brian Jarosinski was intentionally walked as he pinch-hit for the pitcher, Sam Martinez pushed across Lehmann as he reached on another error by the third baseman. Mike Muscato, the Redfish right fielder, brought home McCann and the Redfish padded their lead to 6-4.
Both starters took no decisions on the night. Fernandez pitched 5.1 innings with 4 ER on 8 hits. He struck out 3 and walked only 2 Joes. Culpepper pitched 5.0 innings with 3 ER on 5 hits and had 2 Ks. The Redfish got great relief from Yanier Manso, Justin Ottman, Justin Wichert and Aristedes Almenar. The four relievers combined for 3.2 innings pitched and allowed no runs. They combined for 4 Ks and only allowed 1 hit and 2 free passes.
The next time the Redfish came to the plate in the top of the 8th, the Joes were seeing double once again. Josh Murray and William Plaza hit back-to-back singles off Joes reliever Henry Martinez and drove him out of the game. Lehmann drove home Murray and finished the night going 3-for-4 with 3 Hits, 3 runs scored and an RBI. McCann didn't get the cycle but drove home his 3rd run of the night as he reached on an E4 and that was all the Redfish needed as they took their first series of the season. McCann, like Lehmann, finished 3-for-4 on the night. Manso (1-1) took home the victory with 0.2 innings pitched and a strikeout.
The Redfish return to Charlotte Sports Park and welcome their new manger Cecil Fielder as they set to take on the Aiken Foxhounds beginning Father's Day, June 17th. Fathers can enter for their chance to win a 32" LCD TV from UpScale Barbeshop. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com.
