Cecil Fielder Takes Over For Redfish
June 16, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- Fans of the Charlotte County Redfish will be seeing a lot more of SCL Roving Hitting Instructor Cecil Fielder as he will take over managerial duties for the Redfish beginning Sunday.
"Having someone with the knowledge and passion for the game like Cecil Fielder accept this position will allow a smooth transition for everyone involved," shared SCL Chief Operating Officer Chris Allen.
Former manager Jackie Hernandez will continue to be a part of the South Coast League family, accepting a position on the league level for the remainder of 2007. The Redfish, who currently are posting a league worst 5-20 mark to begin the season, can use a breath of fresh air in the dugout.
"It's a benefit to be able to promote from within," shared Redfish GM Steven Tricarico. "Cecil Fielder is a name and personality that or fans will be familiar with and we look forward to having him guide us through the rest of our season."
Fielder will take over a team that has struggled to find an identity early in the season. Numerous roster moves and player turnover haven't helped a young team like the Redfish find their stride. With a focus on taking the season one game at a time, Fielder believes that his squad will make an impact in the second half.
"It's going to be a good challenge, but we need to have a different attitude when we're on the field," said Fielder. "There is a way to win and a way to lose. I'm going to teach these guys how to be professionals. I want our fans to come out and watch us compete night in and night out."
A graduate of UNLV, Fielder was chosen by the Kansas City Royals in the 4th round of the 1982 draft. The Royals ultimately traded Fielder to the Toronto Blue Jays in February of 1983 where he began his minor league career.
Fielder made his debut with the Blue Jays in the summer of 1985, and managed to hit 31 homeruns and 84 RBI's in limited playing time over four seasons. In 1990, Fielder returned to the majors with the Detroit Tigers and became the first player to hit 50 homeruns in a season since George Foster hit 52 for the Reds in 1977.
The Redfish are back home in Charlotte County for nine games in eleven days this Sunday, June 17th-Fathers Day, until next Wednesday, June 27th. With upcoming promotions such as Hospitality Night, Bark at the Park, Military Appreciation Night, Guest Appearance by RALLY Entertainment, and even a Boy Scout Sleepover at the stadium, it is sure to be an exciting atmosphere.
