Redfish Left Stranded By Joes

Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Charlotte County Redfish were looking to make it two in a row at home and take their first series of the season against the Anderson Joes. The Joes, though, had other plans and with great starting pitching they snatched a win by the score of 6-1.

Daniel Chaffardet (1-3) took to the hill for the Redfish. Chaffardet cruised through the first inning taking down the Joes in order and striking out two. The Joes had Tyler Addison (1-1) on the mound. Ramon Downing singled but was snuffed out on a PJ Lehmann double play to end the inning.

Chaffardet set down the first two batters he faced in the second inning before Joes's recent roster addition, Jeury Espinal, drew a two-out walk. Chaffardet wasn't fazed as he induced a ground ball to end the inning. Anthony Sandstrom and Jeremy McCann hit back-to-back singles to start the second but were stranded as Sam Martinez grounded out. In the top of the third, something changed with Chaffardet. After striking out the leadoff man, Chaffardet allowed four straight hits including an RBI double by Joes' second baseman, Brandon Carter, and a 2-run homerun to right off the bat of Heath Keel. With the bases loaded, Chaffardet got out of the jam with a tailor made 4-6-3 double play.

The Redfish again landed a runner on base in the bottom of the third, but Addison got out of the inning with a fly out and ground out. Chaffardet got back on track as he took down the Joes in order in the top of fourth. The Redfish would crack Addison as Redfish catcher, William Plaza, ripped a double to center and was pushed to third as Jose Garcia bunted his way to first base. With runners on the corners, Anthony Sandstrom drove in Plaza with a sacrifice fly and the Redfish were within two runs. Plaza would finish the night going 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, a stolen base and was hit by a pitch.

LHP Justin Ottman came on in relief for Chaffardet in the top of the seventh and pitched very well in his first appearance in a Redfish uniform. Chaffardet pitched 5 innings allowing 3 ER on six hits, struck out 5 and walked just one. A new addition to the Redfish roster, Ottman pitched two scoreless innings allowing one hit, a walk and striking out two.

The next Redfish reliever, Lazaro Pineiro, wasn't as fortunate as his predecessors. Pineiro, who is still battling back troubles that put him on the DL earlier this season, couldn't record an out in the top of the eighth as the Joes padded their lead with two runs on three hits. The Redfish tried to respond as Ramon Downing and Plaza each singled to start a one-out rally. With two outs and Sandstrom at the plate, Hernandez used a double steal to put both runners in scoring position but Sandstrom flew out to center to end the inning and a possible rally. The Redfish would leave ten stranded on the night.
