Redfish Keep Joes Winless In Second Half

July 13, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Charlotte County Redfish took the field at the Charlotte Sports Park for the first time in the second half of the inaugural South Coast League season. The Redfish returned from one of their best road trips of the season and were still feeling the sting of an extra-inning loss to Macon from Tuesday night's double-header. The starting pitching and bats stayed hot in the home opener as the 'Fish downed the Anderson Joes 5-1.

Millard Dawson lead off the bottom of the 1st inning with a walk and Jose Gutierrez earned his way to first by taking a ball in the side. The Redfish have become a more aggressive team on the base paths and it was apparent early as Dawson and Gutierrez each put themselves closer to home with Dawson swiping his 13th bag and Gutierrez picking up steal number 6. The aggressiveness paid off as Dawson came home on a Billy Kovatch ground out and Gutierrez followed on a Jason Hurst RBI single to leftfield and the Redfish were up 2-0.

Anderson got a run back in the top of the 3rd inning with a leadoff triple to right field off the bat of Brandon Carter. Hector Borg grounded out to first base scoring Carter and the Joes had pushed themselves within a run at 2-1. Brandon Camardese (2-1), the Redfish southpaw, didn't allow the Joes to tiptoe any closer. Camardese took the run support that his Redfish teammates had provided him and tossed a stellar game. Camardese allowed only 4 hits, 3 free passes and that lone run. He also added 6 strikeouts, a single-game high.

The aggressive bats and base running continued throughout the night. Billy Kovatch kept pace with his teammate Dawson as he stole two bases on the night to push is total to 13. Josh Murray continued to use the long ball as he tattooed a pitch from Joes' starter Ronald Ball (1-2) over the leftfield wall and the Redfish went up 3-1 after 3 innings. The Joes relief didn't have much success stopping the long ball either. In the 8th inning after Kovatch singled off Joes' reliever Henry Martinez, Jason Hurst quickly cleared the bases with a 2-run shot to give the Redfish a 5-1 lead.

Redfish relief, which has continued to dominate in the late innings, did it again. Andy Polk returned from his first Redfish road trip and threw 2.0 strong innings with 1 hit and 1 strikeout. Aaron Easton added a scoreless inning with a strikeout of his own. Aristedes Almenar, who had a roller coaster of a road trip, silenced the Joes in the 9th inning as he set them down in order including a game ending strikeout to preserve Camadese's victory.

The Redfish will take on the Joes and look to take the series tomorrow night, July 13th. It will be "Freaky Friday" with on-field costume contest. There will also be post-game fireworks. First pitch will be at 6:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com. For more information, check out www.redfishbaseball.com.
