Aiken Foxhounds News Release
AIKEN, S.C. - Scoring five runs in the fifth inning, including three on back-to-back-to-back bases loaded walks, the Aiken Foxhounds (23-26, 1-3) beat the visiting Bradenton Juice (28-21, 4-1) 6-3 Friday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium to earn their first win of the South Coast League's second half.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, Aiken went to work as Ben Bando followed a Bradley Key one-out double with his sixth home run of the season.
Tim Sweeney and Josh Eachues then singled and advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Steve Dunham. Bradenton starter Rocky Collis then walked Scott Houin to load the bases. That was only the start of the pitcher's wildness. Garth McKinney and Chad Miller walked to plate a pair and end Collis' night. Reliever Steve Alverson did not stop the bleeding, walking Kelly Hunt to force in another run and give the Hounds a 5-3 lead.
Steve Dunham, the league-leader in appearances, made his first start of the season for the Foxhounds. The big right-hander allowed a run on a sacrifice fly in the third as the Juice scored first. Nick Corbeil then hit a towering two-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Juice a 3-0 lead.
Dunham (4-5) worked five innings, allowing just the three earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two.
The Hounds added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI infield hit by Scott Houin.
Brian Grivalja, David Martinez, Gary Lee, and A.J. Montano shut the Juice down over the final four innings. Montano worked a perfect ninth, throwing just nine pitches and striking out two for his fifth save.
Collis (2-5) took the loss for Bradenton, allowing five runs, all earned, in 3.2 innings. He allowed five hits and walked four while striking out five. The Foxhounds got the win despite striking out 14 times against Juice pitching.
Houin and Sweeney both went 3-for-4 for Aiken, while Josh Eachues had two hits in four at-bats in his first action since rejoining the squad.
Aiken and Bradenton will play the rubber game of their three-game set at 7:05 PM Saturday night at Hernandez Stadium.
