Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish can't seem to crack the Peanuts. In every game of the series, the Redfish have kept it close and tonight was no different. Charlotte County sent rookie right-hander Michael Oberg to the hill to face Shannon Wirth of the Peanuts. The Redfish got to Wirth early but the Peanuts got a 5-for-5 night from Steve Garrabrants and that was all they needed as the Redfish fell 4-1.

Oberg made his professional debut for the Redfish after a stellar career at Lee University. Oberg got his first strike out as he set down Jaysha Balcom and quickly chalked up number two as Mike Caruso went down swinging. Steve Garrabrants, the one man Redfish pitching couldn't solve, doubled down the right field line but was left stranded as Oberg got Doc Brook to fly out.

Millard Dawson was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 1st and reached third as Wirth tried and missed on a pickoff attempt. Joes Gutierrez grounded out to the shortstop but got an RBI as Dawson came across the plate and the Redfish led it 1-0 after one inning of play.

Oberg tossed a 1-2-3 second inning, allowed only two Peanuts hitters to reach in the third and appeared to be in control of the ballgame. The Peanuts reached Oberg in the top of the 4th as Garrabrants took Oberg's pitch over the leftfield wall and the game was tied at 1. With two outs in the inning, the Peanuts had the bags full but Oberg pitched like a veteran as he forced Wirth to ground out and keep the score tied. Oberg came in to pitch the 5th and got the first two outs before surrendering back-to-back singles. Jon Zeringue drove home Garrabrants and the Peanuts took a 2-1 lead. Oberg finished the night with 2 ER on 6 hits, 2 walks and 4 Ks.

The Redfish bats, which had been hot entering this series, couldn't put a string of hits together against Wirth. The Redfish had base runners on in the 2nd, 5th, and 7th innings and each time Wirth shut the door on a possible Redfish rally. Wirth pitched 7.0 innings with 1 run, 5 hits, 1 walk and 5 Ks. The Peanuts added two more runs in the top of the 7th as Garrabrants hit an RBI double and came around to score to finish his 5-for-5 night. South Georgia reliever, Josh Cowles, came on in the 8th inning and continued to frustrate the Redfish as he took the save to send the Redfish into an off day with a 4-1 defeat.

The Redfish have an off day on Sunday as they prepare to welcome the Bradenton Juice for another installment of the Sunshine State Rivalry Series, presented by Fairchild Roofing, on Monday, June 25th.
