Aiken Foxhounds News Release

AIKEN , S.C. - Having lost six straight games and 25 of their first 31 games, the Anderson Joes (7-25) had built up a lot of frustration. The Joes took that frustration out on the host Aiken Foxhounds (19-13) Saturday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium, salvaging the finale of their three-game series with their in-state rivals 9-6.

The Joes led 9-1 before an Aiken rally over the last few innings came up short. The Foxhounds had defeated the Joes seven-straight times dating back to their season-opening loss in Anderson.

Anderson plated a run in the first against Aiken starter Brian Grivalja for their first lead of the series. Brandon Carter led off with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by Heath Keel.

A manufactured run by the Foxhounds tied the game in the bottom of the third. Scott Houin singled to start the inning, moved to second on a Garth McKinney sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Chad Miller then plated Houin with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Joes immediately regained the lead when a Guiseppe Rivas double in the top of the fourth scored Kevin Noles from first base for a 2-1 Anderson advantage.

In a strange half inning, Anderson scored four runs in the fifth on just two hits to blow the game wide open. Carter walked to lead off, but a good pickoff move from Grivalja appeared to have gotten the runner. However, poor execution by the Hounds defense allowed Carter to slide into second safely. An error and a hit batsman then loaded the bases. Grivalja's night then ended as he walked Billy Hogan to score a run.

Kelly Holt relieved Grivalja and struck out Richard Quihuis-Bell for the first out, but then a two-RBI double by Noles and an RBI single by Rivas made it 6-1 Joes.

Grivalja (1-1) worked 4.0 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits while walking four and striking out three.

Anderson starter Ronald Ball (1-0), making his first start of the season, allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work for the win.

Anderson added three more runs in the seventh on back-to-back home runs. Rivas drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a two-run shot, and Brandon Davis followed with a solo shot.

Aiken rallied over the final three innings to make it interesting. An RBI double from Ben Bando plated a run in the seventh. Another sacrifice fly off of Miller's bat preceded Kelly Hunt's ninth home run of the season to make it 9-4 in the bottom of the eighth.

In the ninth, Ricky Seabolt got things started with a double before Bando hit his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall for the final margin.

After taking Sunday off, Aiken returns to action on Monday night when they host the Macon Music at 7:05 PM.
