Peanuts sweep another series at Charlotte Sports Park

South Georgia Peanuts News Release


The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, swept the Charlotte County Redfish for the second time this season at Charlotte Sports Park. South Georgia won by a score of 4-1. Shannon Wirth got his league-leading sixth win of the season while Steve Garrabrants hit his team-high seventh home run while never being retired.

While South Georgia tends to be the team to take an early lead, the Redfish turned the table on the Peanuts scoring one run in the bottom of the first. The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the fourth when Garrbrants hit a homerun that went deep to left field. The home run tied it up at 1-1 and gave Garrabrants his seventh home run of the season.

In the fifth, Garrabrants led off with a single, was moved to second on a Doc Brooks single and then scored the go-ahead run on a Jon Zeringue RBI single. South Georgia tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning. With one out, Mike Caruso singled and then scored as Garrabrants struck again with an RBI double. Garrabrants would then come around to score his third run of the game on a Nick Prosise RBI single.

On the night, Garrabrants went 5-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Mike Caruso had two hits and a run scored. As a team, the Peanuts recorded 12 hits.

Shannon Wirth once again pitched very well earning his sixth win of the season. Wirth pitched seven innings allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts. Josh Cowles pitched the final two innings allowing only one hit and recording his third save of the season.

With the win, South Georgia is now 22-8 on the season and remain in first place in the South Coast League. The Peanuts have a day off on Sunday and then begin a three game set against the Joes in Anderson. First pitch is set for 7:05 Monday night with Dustin Taylor getting the start.
