Red Wings Fly Through The Raindrops, Edge Mohawk Valley in Low-Scoring Affair

LITTLE FALLS, NY The last time Geneva manager Dan Schwam was at Veteran's Memorial Park before this season, he saw his Victor RailRiders drop a slight lead before losing the 2015 PGCBL championship to the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs.
In 2019, however, Schwam is two-for-two, as the Red Wings spoiled a 15-strikeout night from Vincent Vitacco, and walked home with his second win against the Diamond Dawgs on Saturday, 2-1.
From the outset, Mohawk Valley's Vincent Vitacco (Staten Island, NY/Rider) and Geneva's Joel Ciccarelli (Liverpool, NY/Erie CC) both had fantastic nights, only allowing one hit combined through five innings. Ciccarelli's was a little less brilliant, however, allowing three baserunners by virtue of errors and three by walk before being relieved by former Diamond Dawg Tim Geissel (Scotch Plains, NY/St. John Fisher).
The scoreless tie was finally broken in the sixth, when Joseph Carpenter (Cornwall, PA/Delaware) smacked a ball all the way to the right field wall, earning him an RBI double. That double would score Ryan Hernandez (Tampa, FL/Houston), who barreled in from second base.
Vitacco's no-hitter would last into the sixth, when Trevor Rogers (Mountain View, CA/San Fancisco State) hit a ball almost over the centerfield bleachers on the first pitch he saw in the seventh. They'd extend their lead one inning later, as an error from the Mohawk Valley right fielder would score Brennan Chisholm (North Chatham, MA/Central Connecticut State).
That would be all closer Maxwell Barsamian (Weston, MA/Trinity) would need, throwing between the raindrops that came in the late innings to finish off the very wet game for the Red Wings (7-3).
Barsamian would pick up the save for the Red Wings, who find themselves in a tie for first place in the West and extend their win streak to six, while Jacob Land (Adrian, MI/Adrian) picked up the win. Drew Helmstetter (Franklin, NJ/Iona) was saddled with the loss for Mohawk Valley (7-5).
The Diamond Dawgs will be back in action Sunday night at Siena Field for a Father's Day matinee with the Albany Dutchmen. The Red Wings will spend Father's Day on the road as well, heading just about an hour north of Little Falls for a game with the Adirondack Trail Blazers.
