Chicago Stars FC News Release
Chicago, Il. - After a much-needed win on the road against league-leaders Portland, the Chicago Red Stars are looking to further increase their position in league rankings when they take on the Boston Breakers at home this Sunday at 3:00 p.m. CT.
The Red Stars (1-4-2, 5 pts) clinched their first win in league play against the previously top-ranked Portland Thorns last Saturday, on the back of goals by Zakiya Bywaters and Jackie Santacaterina. Although Chicago lacked six starters from its original roster-goalkeeper Erin McLeod , defenders Carmelina Moscato and Rachel Quon , midfielders Leslie Osborne and Shannon Boxx and utility player Lauren Fowlkes -the team gained international experience in German players Sonja Fuss and Inka Grings. Despite an absent McLeod, Chicago's goal was well-kept by rookie goalkeeper Taylor Vancil, who gave the Red Stars their first shut out of the season, in only her second appearance as a pro.
McLeod, Moscato and Quon, who had been called up for the US vs. Canada friendly, are back with the team and available for this weekend's match.
The Red Stars are meeting the Breakers (3-2-3, 12 pts) for the second time this season. The first match between the two teams ended in a heavy 4-1 loss for the Red Stars, with Boston goals by Syndey Leroux and Katie Schoepfer and a lone Chicago goal put in by Bywaters.
The Breakers are coming off of a 2-2 draw against Western New York Flash Wednesday, in which the Flash snuck out with a stoppage-time goal to tie the game. Before that was a 5-1 loss to FC Kansas City on Saturday for the Breakers.
Notable Boston players include USWNT midfielder Heather O'Reilly and forward Sydney Leroux, who has scored four goals in five games with the Breakers; English forward Lianne Sanderson was recently named NWSL Player of the Week and currently leads the league in assists.
Red Stars vs. Boston Breakers kicks off Sunday at 3:00 pm CT at the Village of Lisle - Benedictine University Sports Complex, and will be streamed live, for free, from chicagoredstars.com. Fans can also follow the Red Stars Facebook and Twitter accounts for live in-game updates: @chicagoredstars .
