One of baseball's most storied franchises will now bring its players through South Carolina, as the Boston Red Sox and the Capital City Bombers have entered an affiliation agreement effective for the next two years.

Bombers President Rich Mozingo used this year's affiliation filing period to explore new options for the franchise. "We kept an open mind," says Mozingo, "but we saw right away that a connection with the Red Sox would be an outstanding arrangement for us. From a business standpoint, it's a tremendous organization— and from a sports perspective, it's one of the most beloved teams in the world."

Red Sox officials have also expressed their happiness with the new partnership, as summed up by Director of Player Development Ben Cherington: "The Bombers provide the Red Sox with a great fit. We wanted to stay on the East Coast and South Carolina is an easy place to get to from both our northern-based affiliates as well as Ft. Myers. We believe there is great potential in this relationship and we look forward to working together with the Bombers management to achieve our common goals."

The contract for the Bombers and Red Sox picks up where the previous deals for each side left off at the end of this season: Boston remains in the South Atlantic League but ends its six-year affiliation with Augusta, while Capital City continues its part in the pipeline to the majors but ends its connection of twenty-two years with the New York Mets. The new deal will see its first on-field results when the Bombers take the field as a Red Sox team in April 2005.
