Black Hills Red Dogs News Release
Rapid City, SD - Head Coach Damon Ware and several players from the Black Hills Red Dogs professional indoor football team in Rapid City were at Knollwood Heights Elementary School on Monday, January 10, for the kickoff of the second annual 10,000 book reading challenge. Players helping with the cause were Timothy Wright, Michael Scott, and Joe Zogg, who each stood up in front of the students and gave them advice for reaching their reading and life goals.
The students of Knollwood reached the 10,000-book mark last year, which resulted in the shaving of fourth grade teacher Danny Janklow's hair. Janklow said, "It was fun watching the children get involved." This year Janklow, along with some of the other teachers, have pledged to eat some "creepy crawly things" if the students are once again successful in reaching their goal.
The reading challenge is one of the many ideas used by Knollwood's staff to get children excited about reading. Karen Latuchie, a member of the school's literacy team, said. "We're confident it did have an impact on our reading progress. Making the reading challenge a major event helps motivate the students."
Students in kindergarten through third grade can receive tokens for every book that they read or a parent reads to them. Participants in fourth and fifth grade can earn credit for every 50 pages they read. Weekly awards will be given to students from each grade level, and the overall status of the 10,000-book mark will be recorded on a football field bulletin board.
