Red Deer Rebels' Ferguson Named WHL Player of the Week

CALGARY, AB. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Red Deer Rebels forward Brett Ferguson is the WHL Player of the Week.

Ferguson picked up five points, scoring one goal and four assists to go with a +3 rating in two games over the last week, helping the Red Deer Rebels jump out to a 2-0 series lead over the Edmonton Oil Kings in the 2011 Husky WHL Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals best-of-seven series.

On Friday, March 25th, the Rebels (2) hosted the Edmonton Oil Kings (7) at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer for game one of 2011 WHL Playoffs opening round series. Ferguson scored one goal and one assist to help lead the Rebels to a 5-3 victory over the Oil Kings. Game two of the opening round series went the following evening, Saturday, March 26th, in Red Deer. Ferguson collected three assists and was named the games 1st Star as the Rebels downed the Oil Kings 5-1.

The Red Deer Rebels currently have a 2-0 series lead over the Edmonton Oil Kings, with games three and four set in Edmonton at Rexall Place on Monday, March 28th and Thursday, March 31st at 7:00 pm (MT).

Ferguson, from Vibank, Saskatchewan, is playing in his 20-year-old season, which is his third with the Red Deer Rebels. During the 2010-11 WHL regular season he set career highs in all offensive categories scoring 23 goals and 38 assist for 61 points.

The WHL has also nominated Mac Carruth of the Portland Winterhawks for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Carruth posted a 2-0-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 69 of 71 shots faced for a 1.00 goals-against average and .972 save percentage. Carruth, a 19-year-old (born 1982) from Shorewood, MN, led the Winterhawks to a pair of opening round wins over the Everett Silvertips in the 2011 WHL Playoffs.
