Lubbock Renegades News Release
LUBBOCK, TX: February 18, 2008 - The arenafootball2's (af2) Lubbock Renegades bolstered their receiving core for the 2008 season, as the af2 assigned wide receiver Marquis Belton to the squad.
"Marquis is similar to Alvance Robinson, who was here last season and moved onto the Arena Football League," said Renegades Head Coach Rodney Blackshear. "He is a playmaker that was popular in college at Johnson C. Smith, and even has several highlight videos on YouTube.com."
Belton, a 5'10" 170-pound receiver, attended NCAA Division II Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina and left as the program's all-time career receiving leader with 2,592 receiving yards on 162 receptions resulting in 14 touchdowns. The 25 year-old Charlotte native caught 47 passes for 711 yards and four touchdowns as a senior in 2006 to lead the Golden Tigers to their first bowl game (Pioneer Bowl) since 1941. He also ranked ninth among NCAA Div. II programs in punt return yards (212 on 16 returns) and second in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in receiving yards per game (71.1). Belton's success at JCSU began early on, as he was selected to the CIAA All-Rookie team following his freshman season (2003) in which he caught 39 passes for 679 yards. Prior to attending JCSU, Belton prepped at North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville, North Carolina and Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia.
The Renegades roster grows to 18 players announced for 2008, as Belton joins Jake Bauer (K), Jerome Braziel (DB), LeJuan Edwards (WR/DB), Joseph Harris (WR), Chad Jackson (WR/DB), Marquis Johnson (WR), Xavier Lawson-Kennedy (OL/DL), Anthony Moore (FB/LB) Wali Mumin (DB), Alex Otoo (DB), Elliot Powell (DB), Ronald Redmond (OL/DL), Justin Robinson (DB), Moqut Ruffins (OL/DL), Ty Sellers (QB), Fred Weinke (FB/LB), and Corey White (DB). Media members looking to interview Blackshear or seeking additional information in regards to Belton may contact Chris Due at 806-744-5858.
The Renegades are now preparing for the 2008 season and their second in the af2. Season ticket and corporate sponsorship information for the 2008 season is available by contacting the Renegades office at (806) 744-5858.
