SANDY, Utah / SALT LAKE CITY (Thursday, November 11, 2010) - Real Salt Lake today announced that that FW Álvaro Saborío and DF David Horst each underwent successful knee operations performed by team doctor Andrew Cooper, M.D., Thursday at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center.

"Everything went great for both guys; they woke up quickly and should recover soon," said Dr. Cooper, who performed similar procedures at this juncture a year ago on Javier Morales, Jamison Olave, and Fabian Espíndola, some of the nearly 25 surgeries he has performed on RSL players since the team's inception in 2005.

Saborío, the team's Golden Boot winner with 18 goals in 32 MLS and CONCACAF Champions League games, underwent surgery to remove "floating bodies" from his right knee, while Dr. Cooper and his Comprehensive Orthopedic associates also repaired meniscus and cartilage damage. Rehab for the Costa Rican international begins Friday.

Horst, who spent virtually the entire 2010 season on loan with USSF D-2 Pro League Champion Puerto Rico Islanders, saw extensive minutes in league and CONCACAF play, much of it on artificial turf, necessitating Dr. Cooper's "scope" procedure to repair a small meniscus tear and smooth over rough cartilage in the player's right knee.

Both players are expected to be back at full strength and medically available in time for the beginning of RSL's preseason in late January. Real Salt Lake, the first-ever MLS team to win a CONCACAF Champions League group, kicks off its home-and-home CCL Quarterfinal Series with League rival Columbus Crew on Feb. 22, 2011, in Ohio, with the return leg set a week later on March 1, at Rio Tinto Stadium.
