Real Salt Lake Rewind: RSL Stretches West Lead with 2-1 Win over Toronto FC
Real Salt Lake's version of "Monday Night Futbol" came down to the final minutes against Toronto FC, but an 87th minute goal by FW Robbie Findley would be enough to lift the Utah side to a thrilling 2-1 victory in front of 12,319 fans at Rice-Eccles Stadium. After a scoreless first half for both sides, Real Salt Lake (7-6-6, 27 pts.) got some help in the final third from DF Jamison Olave, who finished off a cross from fellow back-liner Chris Wingert in the 63rd minute to move the scoreboard to 1-0, RSL. An Olave foul in the 84th minute set up a free kick for Toronto FC (6-7-4, 22 pts.) just outside the penalty area, and Reds MF Amado Guevara appeared to grab a share of the spoils for the visitors by converting the dead ball opportunity into the left side of goal to draw the match even at 1-1. But Findley provided the dramatic finish for Real Salt Lake three minutes later, as his sliding finish from 14 yards out allowed RSL to climb above .500 for the first time in club history and head into an 18-day break with a four-point lead in the Western Conference standings over second-place sharers Houston and Los Angeles.
RSL-Arizona U-17s Capture US Club Soccer National Cup VII Crown
The Real Salt Lake Youth Development Program picked up its second piece of hardware this month thanks to the RSL-Arizona Under-17 Team, which defeated Houstonians FC (TX) 2-1 on Tuesday to claim the Boys U-17 Super Group title at the US Club Soccer National Cup VII in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Marco Carrillo's conversion of a Jann Nash corner kick in the 60th minute would stand as the tournament-winner, allowing the second-year RSL-Arizona outfit to lift the Doug Hamilton Memorial Cup as the tournament's U-17 champions. RSL-Arizona used a goal from Minh Vu just two minutes into the final to take a 1-0 lead, but the Texans would equalize in the 15th minute to even the score at 1-1. Carrillo would come to the rescue with his heroics at the hour mark, and RSL-Arizona would hold on from there to give the Phoenix-based squad a national championship. The win for RSL-Arizona comes just weeks after three members of the team also helped a combined Real Salt Lake Under-17 squad (using players from the RSL-Utah, RSL-Arizona, and RSL-Florida programs) capture the SUM Cup title over 13 fellow MLS youth development sides.
Chart Chris Seitz's Olympic Adventures on RSL's Behind the Shield Blog
The 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing are less than 10 days away, and Real Salt Lake's own Chris Seitz will give fans a sneak peek into the once-in-a-lifetime experience through RSL's official team blog, Behind the Shield, located at www.RSLtotheCore.com. Seitz's dispatches to Behind the Shield from Asia have already begun from Hong Kong, where he and the rest of the U.S. Olympic Team are taking part in the ING Cup against fellow Olympic competitors Ivory Coast (0-0 draw on Wednesday; Seitz did not appear in the contest) and Cameroon (Sunday). The USA will then head to China for the Olympics, where it will take part in a rough Group B against Japan on August 7, The Netherlands on August 10, and Nigeria on August 13.
