During the teams' first meeting at Rice-Eccles Stadium on April 30, RSL moved into fourth place in the Western Conference with a 2-2 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes. Just 10 minutes later, FW Jason Kreis added goal No. 93 when he slid a penalty kick past San Jose goalkeeper Pat Onstad.
In the 34th minute, MF Clint Mathis intercepted a pass in the midfield, which opened up a two-on-one attack for Mathis and Kreis. Mathis found Kreis on the left, and the League's All-Time leading scorer blasted it past Onstad in the 34th minute. The final goal of the game came in the 82nd minute, when Earthquakes MF Brian Mullan sent a long cross over the RSL defense to FW Alejandro Moreno, whose header provided the late equalizer for San Jose, ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
RSL RESERVES TO PLAY SAN JOSE SUNDAY: The RSL reserves (0-4-1, 1 pt.) return to the road this week to face the San Jose Earthquakes reserves (2-2-2, 8 pts.) on Sunday, June 19, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. MT. This will be the team's first meeting of the season with the RSL reserves looking for its initial win of the season.
During its last game, the RSL reserves dropped a stoppage-time heartbreaker on June 5 in a 3-2 loss against FC Dallas reserves at Trailside Park in Park City, Utah. RSL's two goals were scored by DF Matt Behncke and FW Dante Washington, while FW Freddy Garcia, MF Mario Torres and MF Matt Broadhead tallied the three goals for FC Dallas. Dallas scored the first goal of the game when GK Jay Nolly misplayed a ball to Garcia who slid the ball into the back of the net in the 13th minute. Real scored its first goal of the game when Cila played a ball to Washington who placed it in the goal in the 22nd minute. Just 15 minutes later, MF Leighton O'Brien sent a ball from a corner kick into the box connecting with Behncke scoring his second reserve league goal of the season in the 37th minute ending the half 2-1.
Dallas tied the game just one minute later, when second half âkeeper Chris Gomez played a long ball up front to Torres who rifled a shot passed Nolly in the 53rd minute.
