NEW YORK (Monday, May 5, 2014) - Real Salt Lake forward Joao Plata was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 9 of the 2014 MLS season.

Plata scored two goals in Salt Lake's 3-2 comeback win over the Chicago Fire on Saturday night, including the game-winning goal in during second half stoppage time of the second half.

Plata began RSL's comeback in the 72nd minute, when he received a pass from midfielder Javier Morales at the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot through traffic into the bottom left corner.

With the game tied 2-2 in the 93rd minute, forward Alvaro Saborio crossed the ball from the left flank to Plata, who was making a far post run, and he calmly volleyed the ball past the diving goalkeeper to give RSL the 3-2 lead.

Real Salt Lake return to action this Sunday on the road against the Houston Dynamo (7:00 p.m. ET).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
