Real Salt Lake News Release

SALT LAKE CITY (Tuesday, March 8, 2005) – Real Salt Lake finished its preseason training in Portugal with a stunning 2-0 loss to Recreativa Huelva, who currently sit No. 2 in the Spanish Second Division. RSL had several good chances in the first and second half with none of its opportunities resulting in a goal, and its preseason record falling to 5-2-2.

“Anytime you can play a professional team of this caliber outside the United States is a good thing,” said Head Coach John Ellinger. “Recreativa Huelva is a very talented team but overall we got what we wanted out of our preseason training in Portugal. We wanted to be challenged and we were challenged.”

TodayÂ’s RSL lineup was as follows:

GK – Nolly; DF – Behncke, Akwari, Knowles (O’Brien 77), Pierce; MF – Whitfield (Brown 75), Kamler, Williams, Kreamalmeyer; FW – Kreis, Selolwane

Recreativa Huelva scored its first goal off a header when one its players made a breaking run down the left flank crossing the ball into the box and connecting with a fellow teammate in the 30th minute, putting them up 1-0 before the end of the first half. During the second half Recreativa Huelva went up 2-0 off a free kick when the ball deflected off the wall and sailed into the upper corner. RSLÂ’s defense stifled many of Recreativa Huelva attempts to penetrate throughout the entire game. The final preseason game in Portugal ended 2-0.
