October 2, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Real Salt Lake News Release
AUSTIN, Texas - Real Salt Lake (11-11-6, 39 points) continued its difficult road form, falling 1-2 in its first-ever visit to Austin FC at Q2 Stadium.
Austin FC jumped out to an early lead in the 18th minute when Cecelio Dominguez jumped on goalkeeper David Ochoa's save on the initial shot. The forward doubled Austin's lead 10 minutes into the second half, forcing RSL to chase the game for the remaining half hour.
RSL All-Star Damir Kreilach provided a 64th minute goal to cut the deficit in half, finding the back of the net for his 13th goal of the season, assisted by Rubio Rubin and Jonathan Menedez. Kreilach and Slovakian international Albert Rusnák have now combined for 36 goals/assists in MLS action this season, one shy of New England tandem Carles Gil and Gustavo Bou. Despite several further chances from RSL, Austin remained in control of the match and earned the win on their home turf.
Six games remain this season for Real Salt Lake, the club posting a 4-4-0 (W-L-D) mark in eight games under Mastroeni. RSL is 3-0-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium under Pablo's direction, returning home Oct. 16 against Rocky Mountain Cup rival Colorado.
UP NEXT: Real Salt Lake enjoys a brief hiatus due to international play worldwide, returning home to host MLS action on Saturday, October 16 at Rio Tinto Stadium against its Colorado Rapids rival. Kickoff for the decisive Rocky Mountain Cup tilt is set for 7:30 p.m. MT.
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:
ATX: Cecelio Dominguez 18th minute: RSL DF Erik Holt blocks a dribble attempt at top of box, but ball squirms free for blast from Sebastian Driussi, saved by RSL's David Ochoa. However, Ochoa's parry falls at feet of unmarked Dominguez for the game-opening score.
ATX: Cecelio Dominguez (Diego Fagundez, Sebastian Driussi) 55th minute: Austin's Sebastian Driussi loops a ball over RSL's back line, finding Fagundez in alone against onrushing Ochoa. Dominguez slots home square pass from Fagundez into empty net far post to double Austin lead.
RSL: Damir Kreilach (Rubio Rubin, Jonathan Menendez) 64th minute: Substitute Jonathan Menendez provides entry pass from right wing to streaking Rubio Rubin, who one-times a short stab to an onrushing Kreilach to cut the Austin lead in half.
NOTES:
- RSL boss Pablo Mastroeni made four changes to the starting XI from Wednesday's 2-1 home win against LA Galaxy, as Donnie Toia, Justin Meram, Nick Besler and Anderson Julio joined seven holdovers, RSL playing its third game in eight days.
- RSL is tied for the second most goals of any team in the Western Conference having scored 45 goals through 28 matches this season.
- Real Salt Lake had four RSL Academy products in the XI and five on the 20-man roster. Additionally, six players on the 20-man roster were previously signed to the Monarchs.
- On Oct. 16, RSL will seek to extend its home unbeaten run to eight games dating back to July 21. During that span the team has earned a 6-0-1 record at Rio Tinto Stadium, outscoring opponents 14-6.
