Real Salt Lake News Release
ORLANDO, Florida - Real Salt Lake scored two goals on either side of halftime before allowing a late PK to finish preseason with a 2-1 win over New York City FC. Head Coach Mike Petke extended most of the match's starting lineup to the full 90 minutes, getting goals from FW Luis Silva and FW Joao Plata to end the third and final leg of training camp in Orlando, Florida.
Twice striking on the counterattack, Real Salt Lake implemented the final preparations for the season opener on March 3 against FC Dallas. The first goal came in the 14th minute, as DF Demar Phillips released up the left side, making a run into open space. He crossed to Silva at the edge of the 18-yard box and the forward curled a shot inside the far post for the goal and a 1-0 lead. Over the rest of the first half, RSL got a few key saves from GK Nick Rimando and MF Luke Mulholland earned a penalty, though Plata saw his effort saved and they went into halftime leading 1-0.
In the second half, RSL continued to build out of the back and got a stellar goal from Plata in the 62nd minute to go up 2-0. After grabbing a loose ball out of the air, Rimando fired a pass up the left side to FW Jefferson Savarino. He played to MF Albert Rusnák, who touched back to Savarino in the attacking third. Savarino found Silva at the edge of the box and he turned and sent the ball through to the opposite side, where Plata whipped a shot past the goalkeeper for the goal. NYCFC pulled one back on an 89th minute penalty and the match concluded with RSL on top 2-1.
Petke used three subs in the match, introducing MF Damir Kreilach and FW Alfredo Ortuno late in the match and bringing on DF Aaron Herrera in the first half when DF Adam Henley came off as a precaution.
RSL now returns to Utah on Friday and will resume training on Monday before the 2018 MLS regular season kicks off on March 3.
