Real Monarchs News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Real Monarchs SLC (13-5-2, 41 points, 1 West) fell frustratingly in Texas to San Antonio FC 2-4 on Saturday night. Two goals from MF Sebastian Velasquez weren't enough as the Monarchs remain winless in three matches against San Antonio since the 2016 season.
A back-and-forth first half ensued after a first minute own goal for San Antonio found the back of the net after a deflection from DF Michael Gallagher opened the match in favor of the hosts. The Monarchs would respond through Velasquez who notched his second goal in as many games to bring the score level. SAFC would retake the lead however in the 27th minute as Omar Gordon tucked home from inside the penalty area to ensure the Monarchs went into halftime a goal down.
The second half brought much of the same attacking pressure from San Antonio as the hosts found a third goal in the 56th minute through Ever Guzman, doubling SAFC's advantage. Velasquez notched his second of the match in the 61st minute when he tucked home a low cross from DF Kalen Ryden to cut the lead in half. Quickly after Velasquez's second, DF James Moberg nearly found the tying goal as his looping header beat the keeper but couldn't beat the crossbar.
San Antonio sealed the match in the 68th minute when midfielder Charlie Ward sent a wonderful curling free kick past GK Jake Leeker, settling the score at 2-4. The Monarchs would continue to fight, generating chances to again level the game but couldn't find the back of the net again on the road.
UP NEXT: The Monarchs return to Herriman for a high-profile match with Phoenix Rising FC at Zions Bank Stadium. Kick off is set for 8:00 p.m. MT.
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN:
SA: Michael Gallagher (Own Goal), 1st minute: A quick throw in from San Antonio caught the Monarchs back line sleeping. San Antonio's Omar Gordon reacted quickly to streak into the box and attempt a cross to the top of the penalty area but the ball took a deflection off of Gallagher and past Leeker for the game's opening goal.
SLC: Sebastian Velasquez, 16th minute: After taking on two defenders near the endline, Velasquez lost the ball but won it back in the same area. Velasquez beat two defenders and tucked the ball home from a tight angle to draw the match level.
SA: Omar Gordon, 27th minute: After Monarchs goalkeeper Jake Leeker made a tremendous save on the first effort, the ball found its way to Gordon who slammed home a first time shot for his side's second goal.
SA: Ever Guzman (Darnell King), 56th minute: Breaking down the right flank was King who calmly beat an onrushing Leeker at the edge of the area. He then crossed the ball to Guzman who spun to beat a defender and easily tapped home into the open net.
SLC: Sebastian Velasquez (Kalen Ryden), 61st minute: Breaking down the left flank was Ryden who's low cross skipped through the box to find the feet of Velasquez. Velasquez tapped home with his right foot just inside the right post for his second of the match.
SA: Charlie Ward, 68th minute: Winning a free kick 30 yards from goal, Ward lined up the set piece and calmly curled the ball into the top corner of the net for San Antonio's fourth goal of the match.
NOTES:
- DF Shawn Barry made his first appearance for the Monarchs from RSL. Barry suffered an injury in RSL's home opening match against LAFC, returning to competition in the match against San Antonio to playing 74 minutes.
