Real Monarchs News Release
Vancouver, British Columbia (Sunday, May 24, 2015) - Real Monarchs continued its early-season trend of controlling the run of play, but failing to get a result on Sunday against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2.The Monarchs got a second-half goal from MF Lucas Baldin, but it wasn't enough to erase a 2-0 first-half deficit and the Monarchs fell 2-1 at University of British Columbia's Thunderbird Stadium.
Real Monarchs started the match with nearly all of the possession, not letting the 'Caps touch the ball for the first few minutes of the match. However, mistakes in the defense throughout the match gave the Canadian team opportunities to score and they capitalized with goals in the 21st and 33rd minutes of play.
Baldin took a shot from half at kickoff to immediately test the Canadian keeper. The wind held the ball in the air and GK Spencer Richey had to tip it over the bar for a Monarchs corner kick. Monarchs continued with the majority of possession throughout the half but miscommunication in the back led to 2 goals from the hosts. The first goal came in the 21st minute when FW Caleb Clarke was left unmarked in the penalty box and took a shot from 7 yards out. DF Justen Glad stretched out to get the block but was only able to deflect the ball past GK Lalo Fernandez.
The Whitecaps scored their second goal when another ball, caught in the wind, floated by DF Danilo Acosta and was brought down by MF Victor Blasco. Blasco beat Acosta around the outside and his cutback pass found MF Ben McKendry open at the penalty spot where he easily slotted it by Fernandez for the game's second goal.
Monarchs best chance at goal was right before half when DF Danilo Acosta fought off two defenders and took a shot that beat the keeper but was denied by the bottom of the crossbar.
The second half started relatively chippy and saw both teams pick up a handful of yellow cards for reckless fouls.
Freddy Juarez' side made a final run to split points with the 'Caps as FW Sebastian Saucedo was kicked in the chest inside the penalty box and awarded the PK. Captain Lucas Baldin stepped up and put the ball in the back of the next to bring Monarchs' deficit to one goal. The final minutes saw Monarchs throwing numbers forward for a chance at grabbing a second goal but they were left exposed in the 90th minute when DF Phanuel Kavita tracked back and committed a tactical foul which earned him a second yellow and dismissal from the pitch.
Real Monarchs return to Salt Lake City with 2 days to prepare for the 3rd round of the U.S. Open Cup match vs. fellow USL expansion side Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. The Monarchs have already played the Switchbacks twice in USL regular season play, losing 0-1 at home back on April 11, and suffering a 2-5 loss at Colorado Springs six days later in a blizzard-laden match. The clubs also faced each other in their final preseason tuneup in Grand Junction, Colo., Monarchs winning 1-0 in that contest.
