Reading drops doubleheader on 4th to Richmond

The Fightin Phils (34-49) dropped both games on the 4th of July to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (52-35). Reading was held scoreless in both games as they lost game one by a score of 1-0 and game two by a score of 2-0.

In game one, Adam Loewen pitched extremely well through the first five innings as allowed just one hit and four total base runners. Loewen allowed the lone run of the game in the bottom of the 6th inning as he allowed a bases-loaded walk to Devin Harris. He walked Kelby Tomlinson to begin the inning then gave up a single to Matt Duffy and followed with a hit-by-pitch to Mario Lisson. Loewen earned his second loss of the season.

Kelvin Marte earned his seventh win of the season as he pitched seven shutout innings as he gave up just three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

In game two, Colton Murray made his first professional start. He gave up a solo home run to Devin Harris in the bottom of the 2nd inning as Richmond would take a 1-0 lead. Kelby Tomlinson hit a RBI single off Murray in the bottom of the 3rd inning to score Tyler Graham and give Richmond a 2-0 lead.

Murray logged 2 1/3 innings as he allowed two runs off three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in his third loss of the season. Kyle Simon tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Colton Murray. Matt Hoffman threw two scoreless innings as he allowed two hits with two strikeouts.

Clayton Blackburn earned his third win of the season as he tossed five scoreless innings as he gave up two hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Hunter Strickland earned his third save as he pitched a scoreless 7th inning.

The Fightin Phils and Richmond Flying Squirrels will meet tomorrow night at The Diamond for game three of the four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.
