Chesapeake Baysox News Release

A night of frustration changed with a moment of exhilaration as CF Dariel Alvarez stunned a sell out crown in Akron with a ninth inning grand slam home run in a 5-2 Baysox win on Independence Day.

All night Bowie had been knocking on the door. The Baysox finally broke through. Bowie had scored only one run even though 15 batters had reached base in the first eight innings. But in the ninth the Alvarez blast changed all of that.

LF Johnny Ruettiger reached to leadoff the frame via an infield single. RF Ronald Bermudez was then hit by a pitch and a bunt from 3B Niuman Romero did not get an out as a throw to third was in the dirt from pitcher Enosil Tejeda. After a popout it was Alvarez's turn. On a first pitch fastball, Alvarez launched a long home run to left field.

Bowie got a strong start from LHP Eduardo Rodriguez who tied a personal season-high with a seven strikeout game. He went six innings allowing two runs with only one being earned. Marcel Prado (5-2)entered and faced the minimum in two innings to get the win. Oliver Drake worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 21st save.

The win moved Bowie within two games of Akron for second place in the Eastern League's Western Division. Bowie is five games back as Richmond swept a doubleheader tonight over Reading. The win is the second come from behind effort when trailing after eight innings this season. Ruettiger led the hit tally for the Baysox with a three-hit game. He scored twice.

The series continues Saturday, July 5th at 7:05 p.m. with LHP Anthony Vasquez on the hill for the Baysox. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior to first pitch on wnav.com.

The Baysox return for a big four-game series against Richmond starting Friday, July 11th at 6:35 p.m. For tickets contact the Baysox at 301-464-4865 or order online at baysox.com.
