Rayz snap Bucks streak with 2-1 win
March 11, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
There was a time that a game at the Laredo Entertainment Center seemed like a trip into a lion's den for the Corpus Christi Rayz. Those days appear to be long gone. Ron Vogel made 37 saves and the Rayz killed five Laredo Bucks third period power plays to top the Bucks 2-1 on Sunday. The victory snapped Laredo's franchise-high, 11-game winning streak. Corpus Christi won their fourth game of the season in Laredo and capped off the road portion of the season series undefeated in regulation with a 4-0-2 record visiting the Bucks. Corpus Christi upped to 33-19-7 for 73 points and extended their road point streak to nine games, while improving to 5-4-3 vs. Laredo this season. The Rayz magic number to clinch home ice is down to four points. The Rayz now have points in six straight games. Corpus Christi Playoff tickets are on sale now and packages start at just $72. Neither team found the back of the net in a scoreless first period. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 12-8 in the opening stanza.
In the second period, both teams broke through. Laredo took a 1-0 lead at 7:57 when Steve Simoes set up Don Margettie at the bottom of the slot for his 14th goal of the season. The Rayz tied the score 1-1 when Justin Quenneville and Derrick McIver connected for a give and go right in front of the Laredo net where Quenneville scored his 29th of the season at 12:00. The Rayz grabbed the lead a couple minutes later at 14:16 when Kevin Watters wrapped a puck around the net and squeezed a shot through Kevin Reiter for a 2-1 Rayz advantage. The Bucks outshot Laredo 15-6, but Ron Vogel was tremendous and Corpus Christi took a lead into the third.
The Rayz held off the surging Bucks in the third period thanks to a tremendous penalty kill. Referee Ian Croft dolled out five power plays to Laredo in the final frame - including a full two minute, two-man advantage. But Vogel and the Rayz closed the door, turning aside all 11 Laredo shots to hold on for the victory.
Vogel made 37 saves on 38 shots and improved to 21-11-4 on the year while Reiter took the loss, falling to 14-6-1 while making 18 saves on 20 shots. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 38-20. The Rayz went 0-5 on the power play and the Bucks went 0-8. The Bucks fell to 39-14-5 on the year and remained in a first place tie with the Colorado Eagles for the most points in the Central Hockey League. The Bucks loss was their first since Corpus Christi beat them 6-1 on Valentine's Day at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
