Killer Bees Game Notes

March 11, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

The Killer Bees (23-26-8, 54 pts.) face off against the Austin Ice Bats (20-24-13, 53 pts.) for the second time in less that a week. The Bees pummeled the Bats in a 6-0 final on Tuesday morning in the annual kid's day game at Dodge Arena. The Bees are coming off a 4-3 OTL at Corpus Christi last night while the Bats fell 5-3 at home vs. Colorado. After today, these two clubs will meet up three more times. Corpus Christi clinched a playoff spot Friday and effectively took the No. 3 seed in the South (although mathematically possible, Amarillo would need to win at least six of their last eight to overtake Corpus while the Rayz would have to lose their remaining six games). The best the Bees can hope for is a fourth place finish. Right now, Rio is six points behind Amarillo and four behind Arizona. The Bees are now one point ahead of Austin thanks to last night's overtime point and Austin's loss. Odessa defeated Arizona 2-1 to pull the Jackalopes into a points tie with the Bats (Odessa has more wins) while Lubbock is right in the mix with 52 points.

PENALTY SHOT MARKERS

The Bees have scored two penalty shot goals this season. Matt Medley had the first on Jan. 19 vs. Wichita. The goal is believed to be the first penalty shot goal scored by Rio (team and league records for penalty shots are incomplete). Dennis Maxwell scored Rio's second penalty shot goal at Arizona on Feb. 20.

MULTIPLE GOAL GAMES

Killer Bees players have accounted for 18 multi-goal games this season; the team has yet to see a player bag a hat trick. Five of those games came from players no longer with the club; Bill Newson (3), Emery Olauson (1) and Doug Orr (1). The Bees are 6-6-1 when a current player scores multiple goals in a game; Jason Cirone leads the club with four multi-goal games.

NEW CAREER HIGHS FOR GOALS

Matt Reynolds' shorthanded goal on Feb. 1, his 11th goal overall, tied a personal-best. He scored 11 goals as a rookie with Fort Worth last season, and had never scored more than nine goals through his junior and college career...Ryan Carrigan's fifth goal of the season set a career-high for the second-year D-man...

KILLER BEES TEAM NOTES

SEASON-HIGH FOR GOALS IN A PERIOD

The Bees scored five times in the second period vs. Austin on March 6 in a 6-0 win. That set a season-high for goals in a period and was one short of the franchise record; Rio scored six times in the third period of an 11-2 win over Austin on Dec. 11, 2005.

PACE YOURSELF

The Killer Bees close the regular season with a trio of busy stretches. From Feb. 16-24, the team played six games in nine days and went 3-3. The Bees play a pair of six-in-10's to close things out (March 2-11, March 16-25).

BEES PEPPERED

Laredo peppered the Bees with 22 shots (to Rio's two) and five goals in the first period of a 5-3 loss at the LEC on March 2, 2007. That's the most shots allowed in a period this season, eclipsing Corpus Christi's 21 in the second period on Dec. 1. The franchise record is 23 shots allowed at Odessa (3/4/05, 2nd); the Jackalopes scored a previous opponent-high five goals in that second period. Corpus Christi set a new opponent-high with a six-goal third period on Feb. 3.

STRINGING ROAD WINS

The Bees are looking to do something they have failed to accomplish all season; win three consecutive road games. The Bees have won two games in a row on the road three times this season. The team has won three in a row overall three times, most recently from Jan. 19-26.

BEES EARN SIX ON LONGEST TRIP

From February 20-March 10, the Bees played eight of nine games away from Dodge Arena, including six in a row (Feb. 20-March 3). Rio went 2-4-2 over those road games. The six in a row on the road was the second-longest road trip in franchise history. The team went on a seven-game swing from Dec, 12-30, 2003, and compiled a 3-2-2 record. The Bees visited Arizona, New Mexico, Odessa, Austin, Laredo and Corpus Christi (three times).

NAIL BITERS

The Bees are 11-5-8 (4 SOL) in one-goal games this season.

CEASE FIRE!

Youngstown set an opponent all-time record with 55 total shots on January 26 at the Chevrolet Center in Youngstown. Jeremy Symington set a Bees franchise record with 53 saves in the 3-2 SO win, while the shot total was also a franchise-high for the Steelhounds.

ATTENDANCE IS UP

Through the first 22 openings this season, the Killer Bees averaged 4,942 fans per game. Through the first 22 games last season, the Bees averaged 4,839. That's an increase of 103 fans per game.

GET THE FIRST GOAL

Rio is 7-21-6 (3 SOL) when allowing the first goal and 16-5-2 (1 SOL) when scoring first.

IT'S NEVER EASY TO COME BACK

The Bees are 2-25-1-2 when trailing after two periods. Conversely, they are 18-1-1 when leading after two. Both losses came vs. Corpus Christi; the only straight-up loss was a 7-3 decision to the Rayz on Feb. 3, and the OTL loss was at Corpus on March 6.

EACH DAY, BY DAY, DAY BY DAY, BY DAY

Rio has been the most successful on Fridays (10-9-2). Their least successful day of the week is Sunday (1-6-1). The team plays at least one game on each day of the week except Monday this season. Rio is 8-8-4 on Saturdays.

BOOSTER SHOT

The Bees averaged 2.73 goals scored per game in the 33 games up until "The Trade" that brought David Masse and Matt Medley to the Valley. In the six games following the trade, Rio potted 22 goals for an average of 3.66.

BEES LOSE AT CORPUS CHRISTI FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALMOST TWO YEARS

A 6-1 loss at Corpus Christi on January 5, 2007, marked the first time the Bees lost at American Bank Center for the first time since March 17, 2005.

LAREDO BOMBS NINE GOALS VS. BEES

The nine goals scored by Laredo on Dec. 10 set a new opponent regular season record. The previous high was eight, scored by the Bucks on Dec. 17, 2004. Laredo scored nine goals vs. the Bees in Game 5 of the first round of 2006 CHL playoffs (April 9, 2006).

AUSTIN TIES OPPONENT RECORD

Austin scored goals 11 seconds apart on Nov. 11, setting a new opponent record for quickest goals.
