Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, Texas: September 30, 2004 - The Corpus Christi Rayz had one veteran spot available on their roster and used it on a big-time scorer. On Thursday, the Rayz signed forward, Greg Bullock to a one-year contract, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President, Larry Linde announced. Bullock is the 19th player under contract with Corpus Christi and fills the fourth and final veteran spot.
Bullock, 31, has been a consistent scoring threat throughout his career at many different levels. He has scored more than a point per game in each of his last five seasons, and has over 500 career points in his 533 professional games. In his illustrious nine-year career, Bullock has played professionally in Germany, Italy, England, the West Coast Hockey League, ECHL, International Hockey League and American Hockey League. This is will be his first stint in the CHL. Last season Bullock split time between the Fresno Falcons of the ECHL and the Straubing Tigers in Germany. In 48 games combined with the two clubs, Bullock put up 25 goals and 62 points. Rayz Head Coach, Ken McRae is hoping that the same success Bullock has seen throughout his career will follow him to Corpus Christi.
"Greg's numbers pretty much show you how productive he's been wherever he goes," said McRae. "With his talent and determination, we're counting on him being one of the top point scorers in league." McRae added that it was more than the scoring that made Bullock an attractive addition to his roster. "He is a great guy and a proven leader. He has such a vast arena of experience in pro hockey and can lead by example. We got a tremendous asset in Greg."
McRae wasn't the only one excited about Bullock playing in Corpus Christi. The veteran center said he was looking forward to this season in South Texas. "I'm happy to be coming back to North America," said Bullock, who spent the better part of the last six seasons in Europe. "I look for a situation where I can help the team I'm on. I expect a lot from myself."
Bullock had several off-season options and said that he came to Corpus Christi because of Coach McRae and the excitement surrounding the team.
"Ken has always had solid teams. He's got a great reputation and is trying to build a winner there. I like that competitiveness about him. That's the way I like to play. I have a strong work ethic and am a hockey first type of guy."
Bullock is originally from Cambridge, Ontario. The 5' 11", 185 lb. centerman attended the University of Massachusetts â Lowell prior to turning pro. He led his team in scoring in both seasons that he played there, and put up 65 points and 125 penalty minutes in only 40 games in the 1994-95 season. Now entering his tenth professional season, Bullock has kept his scoring ability and shows no signs of slowing down. In his last two seasons, he has collected 129 points in 102 games. Bullock becomes one of three veteran forwards on the Rayz, joining Matt Noga and Dave Gilmore. The trio is expected to provide the Rayz roster with a lot of depth and scoring power.
In other Rayz news, the team has announced that two players are attending American Hockey League training camps. Rayz rookie forward Rodney Bauman is attending camp with the Milwaukee Admirals and second year defenseman Anthony D'Arpino is joining camp with the Providence Bruins. With the National Hockey League currently locked out of their upcoming season, these two men will be playing amongst the best professional competition available in preparation for the 2004-05 season.
"This is a great opportunity for two fine young players," said McRae. "This will be a wonderful experience for them, and help them as hockey players. We look forward to seeing what they will be able to showcase when we start camp on October 11th."
The Rayz will begin the 2004-05 season in Austin on October 22nd, and host the Laredo Bucks in the first ever event at the AmericanBank Center on November 5th and 7:05pm. Training camp officially opens up on Monday, October 11, 2004. The Rayz will host three preseason games, including one versus the Mexico National Hockey Team in the Memorial Coliseum. Preseason games begin on Thursday, October 14, 2004.
