Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Fort Worth - Corpus Christi Rayz center Randy Murphy scored a powerplay goal with just 55 seconds left in overtime to give the visiting Rayz a 3-2 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas on Saturday night at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum.
Murphy's goal, his eleventh of the season, came on a screaming slap shot from the bottom of the right wing circle. Facing traffic in front of the net, Brahmas netminder Andrew Martin had little opportunity to stop the shot as it sailed in the net right under the cross bar of the goal.
The overtime heroics from Murphy spoiled an inspired effort by the Brahmas, who again were playing with just fourteen skaters due to injuries. Fort Worth scored the initial goal of the game 8:13 into the first period when center Cory Stillman deflected a Sheldon Lee slapshot from the left point past Rayz goaltender Scott Reid.
In the second period, the Brahmas would relinquish their lead, thanks to two Corpus Christi goals in a span of 2:22. First, Rayz winger Derrick McIver tied the game at one at the 13:06 mark of the second with a wrist shot from the right wing side that eluded Martin. Then, Corpus center Chris Robertson capitalized on a Brahmas turnover with a shorthanded goal at the 15:28 mark of the period to put the Rayz up 2-1.
Corpus Christi tried to protect their one goal margin in the third period, but the Brahmas would not fade. Gathering momentum from a vocal crowd of 5,396 on hand at the "Will", the Brahmas pushed for the tying goal. Fort Worth was rewarded for their resiliency with just 6:50 left in regulation when left wing Wes Mason worked the puck towards the Rayz net. Stillman was there, digging the puck out of the mad scramble in front of the Rayz goal crease to push it into the Corpus net and tie the game at two.
In the overtime period, scoring chances were at a minimum for both teams. Then, Brahmas rookie d-man Justin Coutu was whistled for a roughing penalty at the 3:47 mark of the period. With the four on three man-advantage, Murphy was able to score the game-winning goal.
Reid picked up the win in net for Corpus, allowing the two Fort Worth goals on 26 shots. Martin was solid in his home debut for the Brahmas,
The win for the Rayz, now 17-26-2 on the season, was their second in a row. The overtime loss by the Brahmas, 13-26-7, extends their winless streak to six consecutive games (0-4-2).
Fort Worth will next be in action on Friday, February 17 when they host the Youngstown Steelhounds at 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center. For additional information, please contact the Brahmas team office at (817) 336-4423.
